Transformation of Steve Downie

From Bob Duff of the Windsor Star (via the Gazette):

Truth be told, Downie has transformed himself in Tampa from someone who could have become a Gong Show candidate much like Sean Avery into an effective NHL player.

“He’s made a conscious effort to do that and we want to reassure to him that he is a good player and his play in the playoffs is showing that,” Yzerman said.

“He’s got great hockey sense, he’s got good skills, he sees the ice very well. We want him on the ice. We don’t want him in the penalty box. We try to encourage him to do that. I think he understands that.

“The intimidation, the fighting, the physical play, you have to be really careful, because you’ll be in the penalty box. Again, I repeat and verify it a third time. We want him on the ice. Not in the box. He’s a very good hockey player.”
