If the Wings can take on Todd Bertuzzi after the Moore incident they can take on anyone.

If Marc Staal comes back it makes it even easier. It wouldn’t be the first reclamation project the Wings undertook. Their locker room isn’t as young as everyone thinks especially on defense: DeKeyser, Leddy, Hronek who is going on year 4, Stetcher is going on year 6. And having all of training camp to decide on DeAngelo vs Lindstrom or being able to move Stetcher early for more draft capital would be a good problem to have.

So I remember the roster and veteran leadership that Bertuzzi walked into being slightly different than what we have here today.

Moreso the media is different, and this issue in particular is the flavor de jour lightning rod of mass media, most of social media, and a political party.  There is just no way Yzerman takes on that circus for a depth defender, for a guy he already traded away once in his career too.

Maybe Marc Bergevin reaches into his other pocket and finds another middle finger to show everyone?

for a depth defender

53 points in 68 games just a year ago. Obviously comes with a baggage (fight with a goalie, said something wrong 10 years ago), but the guy can play

I think the locker room is well established for better or worse on the Wings. The coach has been there way too long for my taste. Larkin the captain is going on year 7! Glendening is going on year 9 (if he’s retained). Even if not then there two 30 something d-men too. They have a 35 year old goalie so I doubt he will get into a fist fight. They just absorbed a player that sought treatment for addiction (Bobby Ryan)...so I think that negates any non-sense about how the locker room can’t handle it.

I don’t think anyone can pinpoint as to what Yzerman is thinking or that he cares about what the media says. Just ask Mantha.

If I can get a reclamation project that has minimal risk with a high reward—I’d do it. This isn’t Toronto’s media: we have softball beat writers with their softball questions.

Yzerman noted in his presser today that they look for “high character” guys in the draft.

He drafted DeAngelo before, but also things have changed. So I wouldnt count on it.

Also, I think Yzerman as a “fixer” is starting to become a bit of a fallacy.

One-year deal. If he is too much of a circus, unconditional waiver buy out. Upside of a talented 50 point offensive defenseman with something to prove is enticing.

Was Bertuzzi a bigot and a racist?

I would love to live a blissful life thinking this simplistically. Must be glorious.

5 months in the hospital, 1 year in neck brace, career over due to concussion symptoms. Life limiting disability - perhaps for the rest of his life.

Takes a certain kind of person to play “what about” with bigotry and racism. Good luck with that simple minded outlook.

Thats not whataboutism. The comparison of the two is the actual argument.

Deangelo is a POS, no doubt. I mean, abuse of officials and just being a dirt bag in general.

But thats not the argument you presented, which is weird because it could be made stronger (to bring up the totality of his douchebaggery).

Obviously you don’t understand the very simple concept of “what aboutism.” The very act of comparing DeAngelo to Bertuzzi IS THE WHAT ABOUTISM.

None of this matters. You’ve already said all you needed to say by declaring DeAngelo’s words and actions a “thought crime.” This is the farthest thing from a thought crime. That’s just the standard justification for defending racists. This bigot DeAngelo can think and have whatever racist thoughts he Damn well pleases. Just like you or anyone else can. He didn’t lose his job and his contract because he think racist thoughts. It had to do with (partly) with SPEAKING AND ACTING UPON THEM. He was engaged within a contractual agreement in which he willingly agreed to the team’s and subsequently leagues codes of conduct and various policies around hate speech, diversity and inclusion etc.

Yes he absolutely is a POS for other reasons beyond his bigotry and racism, but for me none of that matters because it’s a full stop when it comes to bigots and racists. It doesn’t have to be for you and that’s certainly fine.

We can agree to disagree on all of this and you can have a good rest of your weekend.

And rightfully so.

One thing Yzerman, Blashill and the team have created is a good locker room. Despite all the losing the last couple of years, there has been almost no infighting or issues that should be handled internally coming out in the press.

You bring a player like DeAngleo in and he becomes the topic of conversation when energy should be focused elsewhere. He may have talent upside but it really isn’t worth it.
