Three-Year Contract For Robin Lehner In Ottawa

OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today that the club has agreed to terms with goaltender Robin Lehner on a three-year contract.

Lehner, 23, set a new career high in playing 36 National Hockey League games last season while establishing a new personal best in victories with a record of 12-15-6. He also set a personal and franchise high with 53 saves in a 5-4 shootout setback to the N.Y. Islanders on Nov. 1, and then became the first goaltender in franchise history to face greater than 50 shots in one game and earn a victory in a 5-4 shootout win over the Blues on Feb. 4 in St. Louis, which was ultimately the first shootout win of his NHL career.

This is a pretty good deal for a goaltender who many believe will take over the starter’s job as early as this season - as current Senators starter Craig Anderson is set to become a UFA at season’s end.

Lehner is the guy the Senators chose to keep when they might have signed Ben Bishop - and despite Bishop’s great season for the lightning, the consensus opinion among most Sens fans remains that Lehner has the higher ceiling of the two. Whether that’s true or just a product of wishful thinking remains to be seen.

Lehner did not have the season many expected him to have last season (which combined with a subpar season from Anderson to contribute to the Sens overall woes), though, and there are still question marks about his maturity and discipline. While he’s likely to be given every chance to take the reins, he’ll still have to earn it.
