Theo Fleury Doesn’t Deserve These Kind Of Shots

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,

This past week, former NHL star Theo Fleury opined on Twitter that the league-leading Vancouver Canucks were a likely first-round upset victim. Fleury isn’t a fan of Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo. We heard similar comments from Fleury when he was a guest on a radio show we hosted recently.

Hey, everyone’s entitled to his opinion on Twitter – especially a player who starred at the top level of the NHL and won a Stanley Cup. But Fleury’s provocative comments brought out haters on Twitter with some of the most vile comments imaginable about a man who was sexually abused by his junior coach Graham James and who has battled substance addiction.

I agree it’s dumb to make such comments.

However, if Theo doesn’t want the attention then he needs to STFU.  It’s really hard to feel sorry for a guy that seems to almost be seeking the spotlight.

You’re a sick man, primis.  blaming the victim is just nauseating.

Yeah, so hard to feel sorry for a guy who offers an opinion and is mocked for being taken advantage of as a child.

God, you’re a real POS, Primis.

I’m not sure how to respond to this sort of behavior toward Fleury by fellow human beings, so I will simply shake my head quietly in disgust.

Just another example of people who take hockey too seriously.
He insulted a freakin’ hockey team and people respond by poking fun at being sexually abused as a kid?
No wonder people from outside of Canada want to see our NHL and national teams lose.

The reality is if he puts himself out there, it’s going to happen because plenty of people are garbage.  Especially on a place like Twitter.  Of course it shouldn’t be brought up by people.

However, I don’t live in an idyllic fantasy land of unicorns and rainbows out my a** like some of you fools apparently do.  The solution is for Theo to lay low, not to tweet things about hockey teams he knows nothing about and making people mad.

What exactly did he THINK would happen?  Can any one of us say we’re surprised that he’d get some responses like this?  No.

So just shut up, Theo.  Geez.  Free speech works both ways, for better or for worse.  Either Theo is just that dumb and doesn’t know better, or he knows better and was trying to get a reaction.  Otherwise, why is he tweeting any of this?

If Theo doesn’t do this, he doesn’t open himself up for this sort of thing.

you are a true boor and a f*cking idiot, primis.  congratulations.

At least Theo restricted his comments/opinion to the realm of hockey; the Nucks fans that made it personal went WAY beyond that when they had no reason to. Rather than bring up the past crap why didnt they just respond to WHY they thought he was wrong?

Cause, as someone already said “plenty of people are garbage”

That being said, expecting people to be above that sort of s*&t doesnt make someone a fool; IF you want an example of that how about someone who offers the statement -

“not to tweet things about hockey teams he knows nothing about and making people mad.”

Hockey teams he knows NOTHING about? Ohhhhhhhhhh pray tell….

First off HOW do you know that Theo knows nothing about this team? Im pretty sure he still follows the game and knows just as much about the Nucks as any other fan? And what exactly is he supposed to “know”? That Bettman has pulled their name outta his butt and has decided to honour them with Sir Stanleys Mug this year? That Lou is actually Dominik Hašek in disguise?

Talk about someone who sounds like he doesnt follow the game. Then again by seeing the responses to your post Im pretty sure this kind of moronic reasoning is commonplace for you.

Like they say - opinions are like a**holes; everybodys got one but just cause you HAVE one doesnt mean you have to act like one.

Definitely not siding with the classless people who happen to cheer for the Canucks (btw, how many of them were there when the Canucks missed the playoffs from 1997 to 2000).
On the other hand, it’s sad truth that there are a lot of classless and personal attacks when people disagree about hockey on the Internet, especially when it involves popular teams like any Canadian team.  It’s wrong but it’s expected, unfortunately.

I’m sorry, but “it’s expected”?

“Kkensley @TheoFleury14 #canucks 1st round exit??? Did u get ur commentating job same way u began ur hockey career by sucking cock! U fagot junkie!”

THAT is expected?

But you know what?  Now that I think of it, Primis is right.  He should not have expressed an opinion regarding hockey if he didn’t want to be called a “cock sucking fagot junkie”.  Because that’s to be expected when you say that the Canucks are not a Cup-worthy team.

He should know better than that.

Staying quiet because you know the bullies are going to attack you only means that the bullies win.

Yes, expected.  I don’t agree with the calls to tell Fluery to shut up and I, but it is expected that the worst level of personal attacks happen on the open Internet with no moderation.  He would have received the same kind of comment even if it was another team that he predicted to lose, such as the Red Wings.

That shit is just as low as the scumbag B’Lose fans eviscerating Konstantinov’s condition after the accident.

No respect at all for that kind of crap.

I don’t wish to see more personal attacks, but no fan base is immune from these kind of things, and Theo’s history just made him a prime target for the worst kind of those, unfortunately.  Again, I don’t want to see them and I am glad that here we have a place where those things are not to be seen.

As for the original prediction by Fleury, there are plenty of people that disagree.  Luongo is the first person who can do something about it.  He reasoning that the top team is coasting and not playing good hockey heading into the playoffs so far doesn’t apply to Vancouver, which is the hottest team in NHL right now with 9-1-0 in their last 10 games and with only 6 games remaining.
