The Bolts Beat, 12/14/10: Omark’s SO Goal, Lightning Goaltending, Evgeni Nabokov and More

On this week’s episode, Jon, Mike and Mark discuss the “controversial” shootout move by Edmonton’s Linus Omark that beat the Lightning on Friday, address the ongoing goaltending concerns and ponder what, if anything, GM Steve Yzerman might do to fortify the team’s netminding, including the hot topic from yesterday - the idea of signing free agent goalie Evgeni Nabokov.

Plus, the word “foof” is used, which has to be considered a milestone of some sort.

Why do people keep saying the spin move was needless and had no bearing on the goal?  From the overhead angle, it looks needless.  But we’ve all seen the on-ice camera angle.  Omark was coming in at full speed, going from backhand to forehand after completing the spin, you can imagine Ellis being a little disoriented.  And that’s before the fake slapshot.

I think the point I was trying to make on the show was that the move SHOULD have had no effect on the ultimate result from where it was executed. Clearly, it did get in Ellis’ head, or at least his effort on the shot attempt made it look as such, and that’s part of the problem here.

Pretty indicative of the type of goaltending the Lightning have been getting when focus can’t remain through a carnival move like that.

Again, for those that haven’t listened or seen my tweets on the matter, I have no problem with what Omark did. Personally, I don’t care if a player scores with his stick wedged where the sun doesn’t shine in the shootout. When you create a one-on-one exhibition to determine the outcome of the game, you’re encouraging bold maneuvers inherently anyway.
