via the IIHF,

Following a recommendation by the tournament COVID-19 Medical Group and the IIHF Medical Committee, the IIHF Council has decided that, due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship will be cancelled to ensure the health and safety of all participants.

The decision comes following a positive case on a player on the Russian national team, which would have necessitated a forfeit of the Russia-Slovakia game scheduled for 29 December. The game is the third to be cancelled due to positive cases, following Switzerland-USA and Finland-Czechia.

In addition to ensuring the health and safety of participants, the Council has determined that with another forfeiture – the third forfeited game in two days – the sportive integrity of the event has been compromised, and the event must be cancelled.

“Together with the teams, we came into this event with full confidence in the COVID-19 protocols put in place by the IIHF, the LOC, Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services and the Public Health Agency of Canada,” said IIHF President Luc Tardif. “The ongoing spread of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant forced us to readjust our protocols almost immediately upon arrival to attempt to stay ahead of any potential spread. This included daily testing and the team quarantine requirement when positive cases were confirmed.”

“We owed it to the participating teams to do our best to create the conditions necessary for this event to work,” said Tardif. “Unfortunately, this was not enough. We now have to take some time and focus on getting all players and team staff back home safely.”

Hockey Canada President Scott Smith and CEO Tom Renney shared the following statement:

“Hockey Canada has worked tirelessly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure it would be equipped to host world-class, international events in a safe and healthy environment. Despite our best efforts, and continually adapting and strengthening protocols, we have unfortunately fallen short of our goal of completing the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship and handing out medals on Jan. 5 due to the challenges of the current COVID-19 landscape.”

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have always made the health and safety of event participants and the community at large a priority, and given the news that we have encountered positive cases within the World Juniors environment, we understand and support the decision to cancel the remainder of the event. Although we know this is the right decision, we sympathize with all participants who have earned the opportunity to represent their countries on the world stage and that will not be able to realize that dream in its entirety.”

So, how many players were incapaciated and unable to play? How many have been sent to the hospital? How many are in the ICU and on ventilators? I’m going to take a wild guess and say the answers are: very few, none & none.

What an absolute joke.

Yup. But one that’s not funny at all, Ted. And the CCP is laughing all the way to the bank as China (except maybe for Wuhan Province) goes on functioning like it did in 2019.

Yea not quite. You might want to look into that. Rolling lockdowns of entire cities and provinces when just a couple cases are reported. Might want to do some research first next time.

The Athletic said that the hotel where the players were staying had a previous booking for a hotel, which they let go ahead, and there was interaction btw the two groups.

You’re right about the lockdowns, but that’s only been in the last few days and in the northern provinces. It’s the first real lockdowns they’ve had in nearly 18 months. They were operating at near-normal levels in 2020 and 2021 except in Wuhan Province.

And what caused these recent drastic measures? This is from a Dec. 28th report in Medical Express: “But authorities have faced a resurgent virus in recent weeks, reporting 209 infections on Tuesday—the highest single-day tally since March last year, when the pandemic raged through the central city of Wuhan.”

That’s in a province of 13 million people. Today’s infection rate was a whopping 197 cases. If it wasn’t for the upcoming Olympics, they wouldn’t be doing any of this.

But thanks for admitting that the lockdowns were the result of just “a few cases.” It’s almost like they’re Canada.

Again, research is your friend. Dalian, for example, has been on pretty severe lockdowns for about two months now.

China is still targeting a zero covid policy so when they go on lockdown they’re actually locked down. Nobody in North America has any clue what an actual lockdown is.

What a chicken shit decision that is, next they will be shutting down breathing.  The drug companies are making trillions and King Fauci is thanking China daily for releasing the virus.  The whole world should gang up on the Chinese communists, someday these idiots are going to say , we will have to live with it just take all the precautions provided.

The fact is this new variant of covid spreads like *#$%@& wildfire and the same people crying about canceled hockey and bowl games seem to be the same ones who could’ve gotten vaccinated so this didn’t happen or at least was a lot less serious, but didn’t.. You smooth brained *#$%@& who are mad make me sick. You want sports? You want “normalcy?” LISTEN TO THE *#$%@& SCIENCE AND DO WHAT THESE EXPERTS TELL YOU OR THIS WILL KEEP *#$%@& HAPPENING.

You think you’re smarter than a bunch of doctors? Would you let a doctor park the semi truck you drive or harvest the crops you planted? No, right? RIGHT!? So why do you think you’re a *#$%@& COVID expert? You’re acting like selfish children and enough is enough. This tournament got canceled because too many people acted like *#$%@& idiots. Complaining and blaming some scientist won’t help. Grow the *#$%@& up. This is a dangerous disease that spreads easily. There are safe, reliable ways to slow it down. *#$%@& this idiocy.

Chet, you sure do like to get all bent on this because the least at risk members of our society that provide entertainment are being canceled while the rest of society that is more at risk, gets less testing, less tracing, and less treatment, but still rolls out of bed each day to make this world work.

You ignore basic science that your precious (the vax) isn’t stopping this, its blowing right through it, and even if every American and Canadian got your precious, this would still have come to North America, because we’re a global society.

The precious is not a true vaccine brother, its a preventative symptom reducer.  And this strain isn’t stoppable.  Even the doctors you bow your freedoms to even admit anything short of an N95 is now theater, a face diaper.

Nobody “acted like idiots”, life returned over the last year because it has to, and if your going to label people that way, you need to include those who got your precious because those people were told they were safe, and acted as such, so unless you’ve lived in the basement and only go sun side up with an N-95, look in the mirror, you like every other carrier is the problem.

But the positive side of this, if everyone was going to get a strain, this is the mildest, and soon the majority of society will be truly immune via natural immunity, and your cable tv won’t have stats and stories to scare you anymore and get you all riled up.

Turn cable news off for a week, you’ll feel better.

Hey Chet, I am an expert, I know you are Fauci’s brother, you are a supporter or all those alarmists out there.  You know what is happening?  The little boy has cried “woof” to many times, all these so called experts are pretty poor propagandists but Chet you know it all.  Take your message to maybe Cuba they may listen.
The Covid variant going around now is so mild that the kids playing the tournament now could play through, if there were no test taken there would be no infections.  The Chinese are to blame because they cannot play their Olympic Tournament.

Posted by beantownredwings on 12/29/21 at 08:12 PM ET

When you’re right you’re right, man. I stand corrected. They’re not like Canada. They’re more like California.  smile

Most of us did get vaccinated. And, as Murray noted, a lot still ended up testing positive. Lately, some have even had symptoms. Gasp.

LISTEN TO THE *#$%@& SCIENCE AND DO WHAT THESE EXPERTS TELL YOU OR THIS WILL KEEP *#$%@& HAPPENING.

That’s the best impression of Fauci I’ve heard in a long time. Kudos to you.

It’s disappointing, embarrassing, and completely unsurprising how botched the whole thing was. If they were going to send them home after 4 positive tests then they shouldn’t have been there in the first place and if those were the limits then the organizers should have created the necessary bubble and safeguards to be able to complete it.

John Buccigross summed up my feelings on the whole scenario yesterday with the quote “Young people once again pay the price for the blind cowardice of grownups.”

Failure at every level.

I’m still trying to figure out exactly how many players or staff had tested positive to cause cancellation of the entire tournament.  Unfortunate for Red Deer and Edmonton as well as the young players.
