The Tampa Bay Lightning Gave Everything They Had

from John Romano of the Tampa Tribune,

In the end, they had nothing left to give and nowhere left to go. After nine months of relentless pursuit, the reason for their devotion had just been taken away from them.

So they lowered their heads, they leaned on their sticks and they stole the occasional glance down the ice at another team happily celebrating their sudden demise.

And that’s when the damnedest thing happened. In the relative silence of a still-crowded arena, a chant began to arise from the bleachers.

Let’s go Light-ning!

Remorse, I suppose, is for those destined to live with regret. And the Lightning, nor their fans, will have none of that.

When you have played as long, as hard, as valiantly and as gloriously as this group has over the past three seasons, there is no shame in finally falling short.

Even with the Stanley Cup back in the house. Even with history on the line.

The dates the Cup was awarded the last three years. I can only imagine how tired Tampa players would be from 3 consecutive deep playoffs. But then look at how late each of these seasons went and the short off season that resulted each time.

And you could see it in this series. When they needed the energy they didn’t have it - especially last night in the third.

Tampa might not be done quite yet.  I’d say they’re still one of the favorites for the Cup next season.  Let’s see COL get back, I don’t knw if they can.  TB has proven they can/could.

Should be interesting next season,

Bolts should contend next year as well.  Depends on how much other teams in the East go after it.  They still have the best team defense and goaltending combo in hockey.  Their only notable UFA is Palat, but they might be able to work some magic to keep him, they do need a trade partner to take Kilhorn.
The problem is after next year Cirrelli, Sergachev, and Cernak are all UFAs.

I personally hope the East turns into an all out, sell your soul arms race next year so these teams deplete their future assets by 2024/2025

TB just ran out of gas, but quite an accomplishment being in the SCF’s for 3 straight years. grin
