The Pittsburgh Penguins Are On A Downturn

from Mark Madden of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

The Pittsburgh Penguins are standing at the crossroads. I believe they’re sinking down.

The Penguins aren’t among the cream of the NHL crop. If they think that, they’re lying to themselves.

If they believe they’re faster than the New York Rangers, that’s another whopper.

If the Penguins feel they can rebound from three straight regular-season losses to the Rangers and beat them in a playoff series, that seems like wishful thinking.

A very subtle shoutout to Cream right there. I appreciated the cleverness!

I’ll give them credit for a good season, overall.

Started with injuries to the big names.
And often they almost seem better when it’s a bunch
of lower profile players playing a cohesive system.
They’re never an elite team even when everyone is healthy.

But their whole project has for the past
few years seemed like an elaborate act of
collective self-delusion.

It seems like they’ve found a bunch of contributing role players and combined
them with enough remaining talent to be a winning team.

Jarry has had a good bounce back season.
But does anyone think: yeah Jarry’s the guy you want to go into
a playoff round with? Does the lineup measure up to any true contenders?

It’s really hard to let go when you have aging stars.
When they finally concede they can’t seriously contend with this core,
it’s going to be one long rebuild. Even if they happen into more perfectly timed
lottery luck.
