The New York Rangers Have Been Fined $250K

NEW YORK (May 6, 2021) – The National Hockey League announced today that the New York Rangers have been fined $250,000 for their public comments on Tuesday, May 4.

“Public comments of the nature issued by the Rangers that were personal in nature and demeaning of a League executive will not be tolerated,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. “While we don’t expect our Clubs to agree with every decision rendered by the Department of Player Safety, the extent to which the Rangers expressed their disagreement was unacceptable. It is terribly unfair to question George Parros’ professionalism and dedication to his role and the Department of Player Safety.”

Good, I am happy to see this.  It was dumb and childish (or millenial-ish…???) to issue an open letter like that, and should have been treated similar to when a team’s coach or manager complains publicly about a ref.

I understand that there are rules and league bylaws that made this fine inevitable.  But it is extremely telling that the fine for writing a strongly worded letter is more than the fine for injuring two players.

$5K for Wilson vs. $250K for NYR, in my loudest Nelson Muntz voice…ha ha!

Draper’s face was mangled by Fraud LePuke in 1996, who got a two-game suspension IN THE PLAYOFFS and was fined $2,000 by Colin Campbell.

Maybe Campbell got it right after all?

Sorry, “$1,000” and not two grand.

Pocket change to Dolan and even though Parros is merely the latest and the worst,
he called out the NHL in a major way. They deserve this heat and exposure.
Fining them 50X more than Wilson, who could have easily killed Panarin with intentionally nearly driving a vulnerable helmetless opponent head-first into the ice and continuing to punch him, honestly exposes the league even more. It shows how thin-skinned and reactively dictatorial they are. They basically whined about hurting George Parros’s feelings. Don’t hold that high-profile a job if you can’t hack it. Don’t pretend to be acting to protect player safety when you won’t or can’t do it. He deserves more mockery not less.

I always thought Bill Daly would be the guy to replace Bettman, but not now.  Too much of the same type of thinking.

There is one man who could fix the NHL and that is Ken Dryden.  Educated, lawyer but the BOG has the final say and probably not enough of them want a change.

In a sort of related news, there is a rumor that the Astros have filed a complaint to the MLB for taunting from the Yankees fans.  Didn’t stop the Yankees fans from having their day on the field.
