from Katie Strang of ESPN,
Mike Richards, whose contract has been terminated by the Los Angeles Kings, is part of an ongoing investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for an off-ice incident, a source told ESPN.com on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the RCMP in Manitoba told ESPN that, as of Tuesday, no charges have been brought against Richards but declined to comment further.
The source said that Canadian Border Services is also involved in the investigation, but a spokesperson declined comment, citing Canadian privacy laws.

it sounds like one of those things might be true.

Not trying to start rumo(u)rs, but if the RCMP and the CBS are involved, that’s a red flag for trafficking illicit substances.

Yeah, Mr.C/Chet, I think it points toward some type of narcotics charge, unfortunately.

If the only known “facts” were the border crossing and the contract termination, I would be inclined to conclude the Kings were making a desperate attempt to get out from under a terrible contract.
Like the rest of the 19, I’m not a Douche Canoe fan, but the man is connected and knows the NHL inside and out. He confirmed yesterday the incident occurred at a border crossing, that he knew what happened, but he also said that he wasn’t going to comment further until someone else released the details. He also said the incident broke his heart.
Also, Kings GM Dean Lombardi was negotiating with Edmonton and Calgary to trade Richards. An hour into the 1st round of the draft, the Kings found out about the incident. Lombardi immediately contacted EDM and CAL GMs to let them know he had no prior knowledge of the incident and to scuttle the trade talks.
This has to be more serious than just drugs. Drugs may be a component, but there has to be something else as well. Coked up minor being transported across the border, dead body in the trunk, who knows. There is too much precedent in the NHL for honoring contracts of players caught with drugs for the Kings to think they could just cancel the contract; there must be more to the story.

For some reason TMZ sends me emails with breaking hockey stuff…
Just now…
Mounted Police investigation into ex-L.A. Kings player Mike Richards involves the prescription drug oxycodone ... multiple sources tell TMZ Sports.
Our sources say Richards was stopped while crossing from the United States into Canada on June 17th ... and we’re told he was questioned about oxycodone pills, a powerful painkiller.
For the record, Richards has NOT been charged with a crime.
However, he has since been cut from the team for “a material breach of the requirements of his Standard Player’s Contract.”
We reached out to Richards’ agent for comment multiple times but haven’t heard back. Canadian officials refused to comment, citing privacy laws.

You beat me to it haha.
Kind of surprised that it would be something so…commonplace amongst today’s athletes. If this is the sum of it, well, it’ll be tough sledding for the Kings. Of course, it’s possible the quantities were huge but still..

I agree Shazam, the amount found in possession has a big effect on how it plays out. I’ll be interested to see if any official details get released…everyone’s being mum about it now, but it’s a matter of time before someone comes out with it.
