The Focus On Steven Stamkos

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

So now what?

Well, it’s time for the suitors to make their intentions known.

"We're going to chase the big fish," Buffalo Sabres GM Tim Murray said in confirming his team’s long-rumored interest in Stamkos.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed Saturday that teams are allowed to publicly talk about their interest in other teams' pending UFAs now that the speaking window has opened.

And the Sabres, well, yeah, they will be in full pursuit of Stamkos. But they expect big-time competition....

I asked Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland to confirm his long-rumored interest in Stamkos after the draft on Saturday -- which became even more realistic after shedding Pavel Datsyuk's cap hit in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes on Friday -- but he declined to talks about Stamkos, pointing out that he didn't see the merit in revealing his UFA game plan to the world.

Nevertheless, it's absolutely 100 percent guaranteed that the Red Wings will make an offer to Stamkos. The Vancouver Canucks and, of course, his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs are among the other potential suitors, and some other teams might surprise.

All of which must be so deflating to Lightning GM Steve Yzerman, who has maintained impressive decorum throughout this process but especially in the last few days, when he had to watch the UFA window open up for other teams without having Stamkos re-signed.

more plus topics like Kevin Shattenkirk, Cam Fowler and others...

I know the Stamkos talk will be one of the major topics in the next week and I assure you KK will not become SS during that time, I will be selective in the talk...

Ladd is not a real goal scorer and has been traded/moved too often.  Has only scored 20+ Goals 4 times in 10 years , never got to 30 Goals.  31 in Dec is not bad.

Wings have enough players that can’t get over 30 goals and cheaper. He made $4.5 M in 2016.

I’d rather have lucic or Brouwer if no Stamkos.  I really think the Wings need muscle for a variety if reasons.

Lucic is a maniac on skates. Go for PK practice. Tells an opponent he is going to kill him, running goalies, ...  Not even close to a Probert.  Would be a good power forward, net crasher, stand up for team mates… If he can get a full brain transplant and take a pay cut.

Anything is possible as SportsNet says Buffalo, Rangers high on Stamkos mania.  One is a rebuild with a nut case of their own, Rangers have big cap problems, can they legally get rid of Lunquist, Nash, etc with probably no move contracts.

I am sure not very confident Stamkos wants to go to Detroit or the ever rebuilding loser Laffs.

Will be interesting who blinks 1st and whether secondary UFAs are still available.  Stevie Y might do a sign and trade with Stamkos to get something.

Too many unknowns for them all. Blues do have some interesting UFAs.

Who predicted KH would get rid of Pavel’s Cap and come out ahead, at least on paper. Stay off Social Media until George confirms a Wings deal.  JMO but I think Howard has to be moved for many reasons (Cap, high possibility of being a pissed off backup)

It all comes down to what Stamkos wants. If he wants only money, he signs with Buffalo. If we wants only to win the Cup as soon as he can, he stays with Tampa. But if he wants to make money and play for a competitor, he signs with Detroit.

Detroit is the only team that can afford to offer him a big deal without blowing up their core or entering a massive rebuild that will take several years. That’s something.

But, I’ll stress this again, if all he wants is the highest bidder then Buffalo is his team because they will sign him to a $13 million 7 year deal without a moment’s hesitation. I don’t see the Wings going above $11 million.

Taxes.

Not all contracts pay out the same depending on where you live.  Detroit may have an edge outside of FL.

Taxes is the only difference, all Teams can offer the Max 7yrs X $10M (Dreger said $10.5M, who knows)

I would think he ill steer clear of all losers, rebuilding teams and as you said TAXES

There still is the option of Sign and Trade. Tampa can pay more (as his current team) and Tampa gets something back

Does he want to stay close to Toronto (ugh) his hometown?

Of all of the teams that have expressed interest, Michigan has the lowest income tax outside of Florida.

If taxes are his deciding factor, Toronto is out. His combined federal and provincial income taxes would be nearly 54%, as opposed to 39% in Florida, 43% in Michigan, 46% in New York.
