The Callahan For St. Louis Trade Talk

Last night Boomer Esiason put out a few tweets, teasing fans with a Ryan Callahan for Marty St. Louis trade.  Today...

from CBS New York,

Esiason gave clarity to what he’s been hearing Monday morning on the “Boomer & Carton” show. He said there’s a good shot Rangers captain Ryan Callahan will be traded in a straight-up deal for Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Boomer said the trade could include a conditional draft pick if Callahan, an impending free agent, decides to stay with Tampa Bay.

“Now the only reason this deal wouldn’t go through is if somebody gets cold feet or somebody lowers their contract demands,” Boomer said.

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

Blueshirts’ general manager Glen Sather has inquired about a potential swap of team captains in which pending free agent Ryan Callahan would go to the Lightning in exchange for St. Louis, but Yzerman’s absolute lack of interest in dealing his leading scorer in exchange for a rental property has been made clear to the Rangers.

I know CBS is trying to turn Boomer into a “general sports” commentator, but there will never be a day when I put a lot of stock in Boomer Esiason’s breaking hockey rumors.

So let me get this straight.

A playoff team is looking to trade their leading scorer, who has been the linemate and catalyst for their franchise player in exchange for an impending free agent whose playing style causes injury concerns (and likely an early-ish end to a career) and is also asking for too much money for his lackadaisical offensive output.

I read from Kypreos that MSL did ask for a trade, but this is so off base. I don’t doubt that the Rangers asked about him, but I am sure Yzer shot them down.

If this trade goes through I am no longer a TBL, Stevie Y, MSL, or NHL hockey fan. What a joke.

St. Louis is signed for another year at 5.625 and Callahan’s expiring.

Honestly, if Yzerman thinks he can get Callahan resigned at a reasonable amount it’s not a bad trade in either direction.  The Rangers, amazingly, have quite a bit of deadline space, so if you line up St. Louis with a contract the team wants to dump (like Ryan Malone) and then toss in a sweetener to take the crap contract like a #2 or 3 pick you’ve got a good framework for a deal.

If New York can’t get Callahan signed, then moving him for St. Louis is a great fallback position instead of doing the full Poile and just getting nothing for great players going UFA.

The way I see it, Yzerman isn’t making any move in the short term unless it totally suits his purposes and IF he is contemplating trading St. Louis, it may make as much or more sense to do it in the summer as now.

Or maybe St. Louis and the Lightning are going to live happily ever after. If that’s the case, they’ll no doubt let us know. Or not.

In the meantime, we’ll just sit tight to see how this one plays out but it sure seems as though it has way too many moving parts.
