The Calgary Flames Are Without Their Leader

The third-period comeback wins won’t be the biggest test of the Calgary Flames and their ability to persevere through adversity.

It’ll be how they fare the final 20 games while in a playoff push without their heart-and-soul captain Mark Giordano.

The worst possible fears regarding Giordano’s injury suffered in last Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils were realized when the team announced on Monday Giordano had suffered a torn biceps tendon requiring surgery, and will be out for the remainder of the season.

“He was devastated. It’s devastating for all of us,” GM Brad Treliving said Monday at the team’s hotel in Philadelphia. “The next message to the team is this is what we’ve been dealt. We respond one of two ways: You hang your head or you pick your head up and you say, ‘What’s next?’
