The Best Ever Trade If Matt Duchene Returns To Ottawa

from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,

Around noon on Friday – just after the Senators made the first of what’s certain to be at least three large trades prior to the deadline – former NHLer Marc Savard posted an interesting Tweet.

“(Matt) Duchene to Columbus, I called it last night,” wrote Savard, now a broadcaster working Maple Leafs games on the FAN590 in Toronto. “But watch for him to re-sign in Ottawa in the off-season.”...

When was the last time a UFA to-be was moved at the deadline so he could compete for a Stanley Cup, then moved himself back to the same team that had traded him? It’s probably happened, but Duchene was only with the Senators for 15 months. It’s not like he had a lot of time to develop a strong love of the nation’s capital. And now, with his choice of signing almost anywhere he wants come July, he’s going to pick the Senators? A team that has all but warned everyone its going to be near the bottom of the NHL standings for at least the next two years? A team that has all the off-ice problems this one does?...

Tell ya what … if Duchene’s grand plan is indeed to return to the Senators, then Pierre Dorion has just made the best trade in franchise history.

Scratch that .. one of the best trades in any franchise’s history.

Because that means he was able to get prospects Vitaly Abramov and Jonathan Davidsson, plus the Blue Jackets (lottery protected) first round pick next spring …. for Juluis Bergman, a former second round pick who was most recently a Belleville Senators healthy scratch.
