Team USA Faces Team Russia In World Championship Preliminary Round Game

05/16/2017 at 8:22am EDT

COLOGNE, Germany – The Group A title is on the line here this afternoon when the U.S. faces Russia in the seventh and final preliminary round game from the 2017 IIHF Men’s World Championship.

Opening faceoff is set for 4:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET) and the game can be seen live in the U.S. on NBCSN (live stream on NBC Sports app and at NBCSports.com).

The United States and Russia meet for the 16th time in the world championship. The last meeting between the two teams came in last year’s bronze medal game in Moscow with Russia gaining a 7-2 victory. All-time, the U.S. is 5-1-0-8-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) vs. Russia.

Team USA has won five straight games coming into play today. The U.S. record for most consecutive wins in a single world championship is six and it has happened just once, that in 1990.

Quarterfinal Scenarios

  1. If the U.S. defeats Russia in regulation, it will be the top seed in Group A and play a quarterfinal game against the fourth-place team from Group B in Cologne on Thursday.
  2. If the U.S.-Russia game goes to overtime or a shootout, and regardless of who wins, the U.S. will finish second in Group B and play its quarterfinal game against the third-place finisher in Group B in Cologne if Germany is not in quarterfinals or in Paris if Germany is in the quarterfinals. The winner of the Germany-Latvia game tonight (8:15 p.m. local faceoff/2:15 p.m. ET) will finish fourth in Group A and earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
  3. If the U.S. loses to Russia in regulation, and assuming Sweden defeats Slovakia today, the U.S. will finish third in Group A and face the second-place team from Group B in a quarterfinal game Thursday in Paris.
  4. If Sweden loses its game to Slovakia today (faceoff at 12:15 p.m. local time/6:15 a.m. ET), the U.S. will finish either first or second in Group A. The top two seeds from Group A are scheduled to play their quarterfinal game in Cologne, however, if Germany is in the quarterfinals, it is guaranteed to play in Cologne, meaning the second-place finisher in Group A will have to travel to Paris to play its quarterfinal game.
