Tampa Bay Lightning Extend Peter Budaj For Two Years

Peter Budaj is on my list of “how is this guy still in the league?” players.

Granted, last year was his best season as a pro by far, but even still he only finished a couple of clicks above league average. In the other 10 NHL regular seasons he’d played beforehand, he finished above league average in save percentage exactly once (in 2009-10, in a season in which he played only 15 games). His NHL career looked to be done in 2014-15, when he spent all year in the minors and couldn’t record a single win (0-9-6, .888), but that didn’t stop him.

I mean, the best thing you can say about him is that even though his stats have been bad his entire career (.905 in 357), they really haven’t been a /disaster/ since 2010-11.

Now, having said that, two years at an AAV of only $1 million is totally fine for a backup, especially one coming off a good season in which he played 60 games. I’m not surprised that Budaj got extended by TBL and the terms are defensible. I’m more surprised the Budaj lasted long enough to be able to have a “breakout” season at age 34. Honestly he should have washed out of the league a loooooong time ago.

a back up role, where he performed well in LA behind a smothering defense/possession team helped (and kept them afloat when quick went down).

But when he got to TB, his true self showed.
