Report- Ron MacLean Back As Host For HNIC And Sportsnet

from Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star,

George Stroumboulopoulos won’t return as host of Hockey Night in Canada next season, sources tell the Star.

His replacement will be the man he replaced. Industry insiders say Ron MacLean is expected to return to the show’s No. 1 seat just two seasons after Stroumboulopoulos was hired with much fanfare in the wake of Rogers’ $5.2-billion acquisition of NHL broadcasting rights. Prior to that, MacLean occupied the job from 1986 until 2014. Since then, he has hosted Sunday night Hometown Hockey broadcasts and worked Saturdays alongside Don Cherry on Coach’s Corner. It’s expected he will continue those roles in addition to resuming the main HNIC hosting gig — the highest-profile position in Canadian sports broadcasting.

The ouster of Stroumboulopoulos marks a strategic about-face for Rogers, which sublicenses Hockey Night in Canada to CBC. In 2014, executives remade the iconic Saturday night show while speaking of the need to bring it to a younger demographic.

“We want to get a new breed of Canadian fans that get passionate about the games,” Scott Moore, president of Sportsnet and NHL properties, told reporters after Stroumboulopoulos’s hiring was announced in 2014. “I think George does that.

George Stroumboulopoulos was fine. The problem was he wasn’t Ron MacLean.

The guy would steer conversations to topics while MacLean would give you information on topics.

But the real problems with the broadcast is the fact they cut Coach’s corner by 2 minutes. They play ads at the bottom of the screen while waiting for the faceoff. And how many Rodgers commercials do I need to see per broadcast? Any more and I’d think I’m watching the NBC feed. Blah blah blah Rogers GameCentre Live. Blah blah blah Rogers Sportsnet….and I doubt they are going to fix those things.

Well, hey hey!

I may actually watch some non-Wings games again.  Nice to see the muckety-mucks get their head out of their a$$es and not fix things that didn’t need fixing.

from thr CP at CBC,

n an interview Sunday night, MacLean said he remains focused on those roles for now.

“I love Rogers Hometown Hockey and Coach’s Corner. I’ve got those jobs as it is now,” he said. “I’m kind of focused on that and I think there’s this feeling that we may do more or that I may do more going forward but I can guarantee that it’s not solid yet until Scott Moore says it is.”

Moore, the president of Sportsnet and NHL properties, hinted earlier this month that there could be changes coming following a low-rated playoff run.

“We’re all kind of just looking at next year and trying to figure out what’s happening,” said MacLean.

Should’ve gotten rid of it completely.

David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,

Rogers Media is planning to replace George Stroumboulopoulos with Ron MacLean as host of Hockey Night In Canada next season but many details need to be worked out before the deal can be declared official, according to multiple sources.

The chief stumbling block to the move is that Mr. MacLean, 56, is adamant that he will not give up his position as sidekick to Don Cherry on the Coach’s Corner segment on Hockey Night, nor will he step down as host of Rogers’ Sunday night show, Hometown Hockey.

A source says the Rogers plan has the backing of National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman, despite his past fractious relationship with Mr. MacLean.
