via Scott Burnside tweet,

We can confirm Paul Martin is a Pittsburgh Penguin.

During the speculation of this move earlier I read some Penguin fans saying they didn’t like this deal too much, but I have to disagree. I think he’s one of the most underrated dmen in the league and playing a more offensive style in Pittsburgh compared to Jersey, I think he’ll put up pretty good numbers. Hopefully the $$ isn’t too outrageous though.

He’s getting 25m for 5 years.  That’s a lot of cash.

My only question is how good is this guy on the blueline during the power play?

Other than that, the Pens D looks secure.

They did end up spending the entire $9M defencemen budget. Apart from the addition of a veteran winger or promotion of a prospect or two, the roster is set.

Nice pickup. Who are our wingers now though? With $2 mil cap left, I’m guessing Shero’s done unless he frees up cap room via trade…

The TSN crew just hinted that John Madden is a strong possiblity to become a Penguin, that’d be a great addition for the third line center.

Can anybody speak to Martin’s QB skills?  Is he the guy or will they lean more heavily on Gogo and Letang to run the show from the point?

Martin will QB the PP most likely, he held that role in NJ.

Kind makes Goligoski pointless if you ask me.

Kind makes Goligoski pointless if you ask me.

You could try to trade him and sign a cheaper veteran defensive defenceman instead, but the savings would probably be marginal. However, it’s worth exploring.

That’s the problem - you don’t get much cap relief by trading him so you’d have to get a young, low salary guy back to make it work.

I wish Latendresse was still an enigma instead of a hoss, but that type of deal would be worth exploring, one team’s question mark at D for another team’s question mark at F, but then they’d just need to sign another defenseman, and that takes cap space they don’t have.

Penguins have just over $2 mil, barring a trade it’s going to be something like Engelland, Letestu and Tangradi filling out the roster.

Well if you plug in Lovejoy and Tangradi, the Pens have about 2-2.5 million left in cap space and have 20 people signed. Plus they have Engelland in the minors on a cheap contract. Not a bad position to be in.

Yes, we have approx. $2.5M with Tangradi or another WBS promotion. That’s not a bad financial position, but it doesn’t make us buyers either. However, it’s worth remembering that the season doesn’t start tomorrow. In a month a so there might be a couple of unsigned players worthy of something close to a minimum contract.

At the very worst, some of our youngster will get a chance to make the team. I don’t see that as a giant problem (yet).

He isn’ t the PP specialist that Gonchar is, BUT he is Good at it & he is MUCH Better Defensively than Gonchar, Look for Geno to Maybe be at 1 Point on the PP
