P.K. Subban Has Decided To Retire

Filed in: NHL Teams, | KK Hockey | Permalink

This honestly felt like an at least 50/50 outcome.

The guy just finished a 9M/year deal.

He’s nowhere close to his prime and injuries have been
a major issue. No one in this still flat-cap world was going to pay
him more than a million or so. And for all the genuine good he’s done
with charities, etc., his personality within a locker room is too much
bombast in relation to his remaining ability on the ice.

Meanwhile, he’s a guy with obvious interests in entertainment and media
and business and so on. Maybe that’s where his main energy and focus have been
for a while? If you can’t get a decent offer to take a shot with a contender, you have to love simply playing the game and being a part of a locker room so much, it’s worth the insane work and battling injuries. Subban has been “bigger than hockey” for years already - in both a good and not so good sense.

He’s got amazing energy and his heart seems to be in the right place, so I’m sure he’ll have opportunities to make the most of that.

For a while I felt Subban needed to reinvent himself. He seemed too heavy to play like he did in his prime and he should’ve got lighter to compensate for the decrease in mobility. I didn’t think he was as done as someone like Yandle so I’m still a little bit surprised at his retirement. But if there wasn’t an appealing offer out there for him and he’s not one of those guys who wants to play for as long as he possibly can, it’s an easy decision. That said, it’s always going to feel like he retired early.

I have a feeling that he might have his next gig in his back pocket already. His personality would suit the TV broadcast between periods a lot better than some of those yo-yo’s from the NHL network deals of last year

When you combine his natural ability to communicate and a good natured personality with his hockey knowledge, he would be a valuable media personality.

I hope he does well.

He might make more $$ than if he played.

Good luck P.K. !!
