Osgood Is One Of A Fading Breed

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

Detroit Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood has 744 NHL games on his resume, but if he was playing junior hockey today many scouts would think twice about drafting him because of his small stature.

“I don’t think I’d be playing ... I have a friend, Neil Little, who scouts for Philly and he says they won’t even look at a goalie under six feet,” said Osgood, who is listed at five-foot-10, 180 pounds, on the Red Wings team website.

“I’m playing at the perfect time for me on a great team. Vernie (Mike Vernon) always said he was the perfect size and I thought I was when we were together in Detroit and neither would be that way today.

“It’s crazy, but that’s the way it is. Dom (Hasek) would be considered small today. But it’s the evolution of hockey, time changes. Now scouts want you to be six-foot-two. Believe me, I’m very happy to have played when I did and happy to still be playing at 38.”

^^^ LOL

Ozzie truly is one of a dying breed. I’m no Red Wing fan (a rarity on this site, I know) but the guy deserves more respect than he gets.

I’d post the link to the commercial with the ranting goalie/taxi driver but I’m saving that for when Luongo finally packs it in.
