Good on Smitty hanging in there, though he had to go to the room. Hopefully equipment or a quick cleanup. Wonder how much more of that we’ll see

Say what you want about Brendan Smith
not panning out as a top-four defenseman, but
he’s got more heart than most of the guys in the league by far.

Garnet Hathaway punching his opponent when he’s down.
While across the ice a Ranger could have done the same to Hagelin
and held up. Typical Caps garbage.

They should have called up Geertsen.
Beat up as many Caps as you can fair and square
going into the playoffs. They’ve got a bunch of small,
bottom nine forwards with no real history of fighting standing up to the Caps.

I’d cheer for the Bruins against the Caps.

Could wilson be wearing anymore protective gear…and just exactly why does he feel the need to remove his jersey after each fight..??? smirk

That’s fantastic. Let the players settle it, show them you aren’t afraid to stand up for yourself. Don’t rely on the NHL to be your enforcer.

The game needs more of this again.

Cant believe they have the nerve to bitch about them fighting and not playing hockey.

And I really didnt think NY would respond like this.  Figured Smith would cause thats what he does.  Good on the Rangers thats not a fighting crew.  Very impressed.

One team came to win a hockey game, the other came to embarrass themselves and the league.
If DOPS does their job, Buch will be suspended for a few.
Glad they pulled Wilson. No need to risk a top-six forward right before the playoffs. Besides, he cut up his right hand a bit pounding on some punk’s face.

Buchnevich doing Mantha a favor with a cross check to the face. A fight certainly would have broke Mantha’s hand again!

I don’t get it. If I was a Detroit fan, I would absolutely hate the Rags for being given the first pick that should have gone to the Wings. The Caps are a very talented, hard hitting, hard playing team, a lot like the Red Wings were a few years ago. The Rags are cheap shot artists who stole your pick.
Oh well…

Next season the Rangers will have a couple of tough guys who I’m sure will be happy to make a good first impression by tuning up Wilson.Meanwhile, the Rangers window is opening and the Caps is much closer to closing.

First, Laviolette says virtually driving Panarin head first into the ice
is a normal scrum - happens all the time. And now he’s hiding Wilson from just desserts? Which is it? Sociopathic roid-rage can attempt to injure every other game,
but can’t be exposed to it?

He has a well-deserted target on his back for the rest of his career.
Give zero respect, get zero respect. All it takes is a Ryan Reaves and he cries and whines. Linesmen aren’t going to be able to drape themselves all over Ross Johnston every time the Isles play the Caps.

The Rangers don’t have a single tough guy in their lineup and are standing up to one with a handful of guys who have a good few dozen heavyweight fights between them. If someone wanted to simply go out of their way to injure Wilson they could have. If they wanted to stoop to his level and blindly rage out and try to injure Backstrom or Carlson, they could have. This is as tilted as the ice is ever going to be in the Caps favor. It could be a long regular season for some of those clowns.

Wilson has fought Reaves a few times. He only backs down from any fight when the Caps are winning. No need to take someone with top-6 talent off the ice for 5 minutes in exchange for Reaves or Matt Martin (who Tom has fought a couple times, too) or some other goon.

I commented in another thread that the second dropping of Panarin was unnecessary and not good visuals. He was protecting his goalie, who was down and being kicked. Someone jumped on his back and started punching him.

I’m curious, are you as upset at Crosby, who committed a worse “crime” last night, or do you just have a hard-on for Wilson?

Jeez, you’d think that the Capitals signed a criminal who assaulted an unsuspecting victim, breaking his neck and ending his career at 25. The Caps would never sign such a person.

BTW - I am not a troll who solely defends Wilson. I wasn’t happy with the hit that got him suspended earlier this year, and I came down hard on him for hitting that rookie in the head in a preseason game a couple years ago. And that Islanders guy a few years ago. I just think that what happened Monday wasn’t a big deal. Also, the Rangers coach said that Panarin was hurt before that. He must have been ordered to change his tune. Interesting…

I come to this site often because Paul is great and on top of ALL NHL news in near real time. I also have a soft spot for the Wings because I had the opportunity to spend several evenings in the Joe in the late 70’s - mid 80’s.

The Rangers have your first pick there. As someone who likes the Wings, it chaps my ass.

The Rangers pick wasn’t the one that hurt. It was the Devils pick of Hughes where Detroit went on a meaningless win streak and jumped over the Devils in lottery odds. Just like they did with a few teams this year.

Wilson is a dirty player a la Claude Lemieux mode. The Caps have pretty scummy players and the organization isn’t much better:

Capital’s twitter feed (promoting violence of the sport—not a good look for a corporation)

Brendan Leipsic (misogynist)

Evgeny Kuznetsov (cocaine)

Wilson (dirty plays)

Chara (dirty player)

or as they say: What’s the difference between an Washington Capitals fan and a carp?
A: One is a bottom-feeding, scum sucker, and the other is a fish.

...and you wonder why people aren’t taking Washington’s side on this issue?

People are, but like most things in life, people also only want to read what they agree with.

As for your character descriptions, there’s plenty of these characters on every team. Some are better at hiding it than others. There’s more drug and alcohol abuse in the league than anyone knows about, not to mention other shenanigans.

I’ve got stories from when I lived in the Chicago. Better yet, my wife worked somewhere that dealt with high profile athletes. Some of the stuff she saw was nuts, but remained a secret.

If you’ve been a Wings fan for more than 5 years, you best mind their tongue critiquing character issues of other teams players. We certainly have no room to toss stones in our house of glass.

Good on Smitty to go after Wilson, but he knew he was going to get worked and hung in as best he could.

Still got that beef with Chara too, for some reason, and we all know how that would go.

Bad fist/stick to the mouth from Buch on Mantha, but I’m sure Mickey loved it. “Can’t protect yourself with your stick anymore…”

DoPS failure, and I have to believe this isn’t over by a long shot.

Wilson is such a great guy - he’s a big brother - the guys love him.

Nothing against Mantha, but this is what you get when Wilson’s your teammate,
and the league protects him. Parros effectively told the Rangers: player safety means nothing and trying to injure guys on non-hockey plays is fine.

Expect more the next time Wilson roid rages and nearly kills someone else.
