from John Vogl of The Athletic,
Kevyn Adams took a deep breath. He looked down and shook his head with a pained grin. He took another deep breath.
The Sabres general manager repeated this multiple times.
“It has been a really challenging situation,” Adams said about the Jack Eichel trade process, which finally concluded Thursday in a deal with Vegas. “It’s so complicated when you’re dealing with a superstar-level player. That’s complicated enough, and then you take in the medical and all the other things that were going on …”
He briefly laughed. A distressed laugh.
“Whoof, I guess I wasn’t ready for that question,” Adams said, trying to maintain his emotions.
In answering what he learned about trading a superstar, Adams showed the pain that many have felt. It hasn’t been easy for the GM, who was trying to reconcile an organization’s losing past with building a brighter future. It’s been indescribably hard on Eichel, who had his health and hockey stripped away through a herniated disk in his neck, and his family.
