Not Good For Our Game

from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet,

I have to tell you, I never thought they’d do it.

I thought someone would step up at the last second. Or, I thought NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman would hold his nose and say, “As much as I hate this…we’ll go.”

Let me say this in no uncertain terms: this is bad. It’s bad for hockey. South Korea may not be China, but it’s not the Solomon Islands. There are a lot of people and influential sponsors who could be exposed to the game.

The Olympics are a fantastic showcase, the pinnacle of sport. The players love it, fans love it. I loved covering them. It’s terrific. Hockey does not win by missing out.

Here’s the problem: it’s not so easy to pick the villain. Bettman is an obvious target, and being commissioner means you eat it. The job and salary comes with that responsibility.

Now if the Olympics were in USA..  The decision would be different.  This all about the Owners puppet saving them MONEY.

Beyond that it is a stupid idea not to go, but that is Bettman and his cronies wanting keep their money.

Don Cherry, who gives a F what he thinks.  I like him on Sat night and his antics.

So let’s disregard the NHL for a while. Diggers should start focusing a spotlight on the kids that will be there and maybe find us some diamonds in the rough.  I hope we stop seeing articles about everyone crying over this. Hockey is never going to break through the big 3 sports in the US anyway.

When eill people realize tgat Gary Bettman works for the owners, he doesn’t care what the fans think, he does not care what the players think, he represents the owners.  The owners had no desire to let their players leave for a few weeks or get injured

The NHL (league office + owners) make some dumb decisions… but this isn’t one of them. There are a few sporting organizations in the world that make the NHL look ethical and reasonable, and the IOC is one of them.

I actually think that—at least as it is currently being reported—the NHL offers for “buying out” dates or simply providing the NHL the sponsorship/marketing opportunity that comes with the rings logo are really fair proposals. Basically, the IOC is asking the NHL to complicate its 2018 scheduling and risk injury to its best (and thus most important) players, all for nothing.

The talent in the league has never been deeper.  Why showcase that on an international stage.?

Stupid just Stupid.
