Feel free to bloviate in the comments.  I’m sure there will be plenty of opinions on some of the awards tonight.

By the way, spoke to Paul via email today, he mentioned something about re-creating Joe Pesci’s blackjack scene from Casino....

I don’t even know this Viate guy you’re talking about.  He’s at least going to have to buy me dinner first.

I’m gearing up for confusion about the Calder and Selke, and disappointment about the Hart.

Ovechkin’s 3rd straight Pearson/Lindsay awawrd.  Only Gretzky’s 4 straight is more consecutively. Impressive.
BTW, how did Bobby Orr only win once (‘75).

So apparently CBC is running the awards on a delay?  Because they had to fit in a repeat of a World Cup game?

Ugh.

Also ugh?  Jay Mohr.  He’s so bloody awful…

I think it is BS that the entire league basically gives Crosby the shaft on awards anymore.  It has almost become popular to not vote for the guy.  Yet, he still shows up year after year doing his part to promote the NHL.  Don’t be surprised if he just stops coming.

after reading the PD live chat, i’m kinda happy (and lucky, too *g*) that the show wasn’t televised here ...

but i agree with most awards. only staal should’ve won the selke.

now ... let the draft finally begin!

Well, since day 1 it’s always been a NHL-created media storm towards Crosby… It’s NEVER been self-induced by Sid and it’s NEVER been initiated by the Penguins themselves….

So, quite frankly, I’m not surprised by Crosby not winning those awards….

In the last 10 years or so it looks like the Players (Pearson/Lindsay) are putting more emphasis on goal-scoring than the writers (Hart).
These are the seasons when their award winners differ and in every case the players (Pearson/Lindsay) winner is a more of a goal-scorer(winger), where as the writers (Hart) tend to pick a player with a more all-around game (center/d-man/goalie).

this year players: Ovechkin-50 goals ; writers: H.Sedin-29 goals
‘06 players: Jagr-54 goals ; writers:Thornton-29 goals
‘03 players: Naslund-48 goals ; writers: Forsberg-29 goals
‘02 players: Iginla-52 goals ; writer: Theodore-goalie
‘00 players: Jagr-42 goals ; writers: Pronger-defenseman

Very Interesting.

It could also just be that Crosby didn’t deserve the Hart because he wasn’t as valuable to the Penguins as Sedin was to the Canucks and that he’s not as electrifying as Ovechkin.

He still won two awards that he did deserve.  This wasn’t an unfair backlash against the media pressure that Sid didn’t cause (but also doesn’t refuse), the only questionable award was the Calder.

I don’t know J.J., I think with Malkin having a sub-par year (for him) if Crosby doesn’t have 51 goals, the Pens barely make the playoffs, if at all….

Posted by Tony from Virginia Beach, VA on 06/23/10 at 11:17 PM ET

The same could be said about Sedin with the Canucks when Daniel went down and they were on the NHL’s longest ever road trip.

Crosby deserved 2nd in the Hart voting.

I may hate Crosby’s guts, but I don’t think heasked to be the NHL’s poster boy (ie only marketing tool) .  Blame Bettman and Co. for much of the hatred and bias by shoving himdown our throats.

the only questionable award was the Calder.

Let me correct myself before somebody calls me out.

I thought at the end of the season that Jordan Staal was more deserving of the Selke and I still do.  However, Howard not winning the Calder to me is a bigger rip-off than Staal not winning the Selke (although Staal remains the most-gypped Penguin, over Crosby).

Yea, ok.  The truth is it is popular to hate Crosby.

Explain this… People would say well OV should get it since he had more points.  Then Malkin comes along with more points and the give it to OV.

People then said well it should go to OV because he has more goals.  Sid comes along this year with more goals and guess what… it goes to Sedin.

Truth is, if Crosby leads in goals, assists, points, leads his team to a cup, and wins a damn gold medal… perhaps then the NHLPA and the league will only then feel required to wet his beak a little.  Of course this all needs to be done in the same year.  Now for OV, he will only need to do one of the five things mentioned above.  Why???  Because he is so dynamic.

tony, you’re sure right about that. but where would the ‘nucks have finished their season if it hadn’t been for henrik being even more productive (and offensively threatening, as in “actually can score”) after his brother’s injury?

without h. sedin having this amazing season, it’d have been crosby winning by a country mile. he just picked the wrong season for showing his stunning offensive prowess.

You sound like what Penguins fans think Red Wings fans sound like.

I don’t care about previous years and any robberies that I may agree happened then.  Goals are not what counts most for the Hart voting, it’s for most valuable.  Sedin also had more points, but that’s also not important.

Sedin was more valuable than Crosby this year.  It’s not a conspiracy.

Sorry about the confusion on Ovechkin, for him, I was talking about the Lindsay award.  Maybe that was more robbery than the Hart, but I think flashiness should count more towards the players’ trophy than it should for the Hart.

Crosby is a more complete player than Ovechkin.  You’re right that it’s vogue to hate Crosby, that is not related to the fact that Crosby did not deserve the Hart over Henrik Sedin.

I suppose it is also correct that Crosby does not make the first all-star team.
First All Star Team

Hate all you want, but when you start discounting Crosby in all awards, then it becomes pretty obvious that the awards are a joke… at which point, the league becomes a joke.

That one kind of IS expected though, isn’t it?  IIRC, there was a poll of NHL players and they voted Crosby the biggest whiner, so if the Lindsay is voted by players, you wouldn’t expect them to vote for the guy they think is the biggest whiner (whether it’s deserved or not).

Well, the awards ARE a joke.  All reward shows are.

What does that have to do with the league being a joke?

To clarify my point, the awards are voted on by the writers, no?  So why would that reflect so much on the league?

This is absolutely ridiculous.  You want Crosby to have an MVP trophy for the collection of all he’s accomplished over his hockey career (NHL and international play).  I don’t think Sedin deserved the Hart over Crosby because I dislike Crosby, I think Sedin deserves it because he was more valuable to his NHL Club, the Vancouver Canucks over the course of the 2009-10 season.  Crosby probably has been more valuable over his career, but the Hart isn’t a cumulative award, it’s for one hockey season, a season where Crosby was not the most valuable.

The First All-Star team isn’t even the point, but he lost that spot at Center to the same guy who deserved the Hart, so it’s basically the same argument.  Crosby was the center for the second team.  If it would have made you feel better to give Crosby the first slot, then fine, but Crosby was not more valuable to his team this year than Sedin.

It’s not persecution and it doesn’t make the league a joke that your golden boy came up short.

My point is not to try and convince you or any other hockey fan that Crosby deserves any awards.  It is simply to say that it is obvious from nearly every angle that Crosby will continue to get the shaft for these awards.  Its just the cool thing to do.

and as for the “golden boy” remark… doesn’t that have to wear off at some point.  Seriously, what has he been given that he has not completely earned.  There is no “golden parachute” for Crosby.

And my point is over which single season did Crosby prove that he was the league’s most valuable player over a one year span to the point where not granting him that title has been considered robbery?

As Garth pointed out, Crosby didn’t win the Lindsay because he’s not well-liked enough among NHL players.  I’m not convinced that’s a product of media backlash.

If you want to talk about robbery through sportswriter idiocy, then let’s talk about that Norris Trophy that Zdeno Chara won because Nick Lidstrom didn’t live up to the Nick Lidstrom standard, despite still having a better season than any other NHL defenseman?

Comparisons to Steve Yzerman, Wayne Gretzky, and Mario Lemieux, for one.
If you’re that bothered by me calling him “golden boy” then I’ll stop that for tonight, but I think you’re assuming a derisive tone much more severe than I was.

@JJ
Howard did mak the All-Rookie team.
——————————————————————————————-
2009-2010 NHL First All-Star Team

G Ryan Miller, Buffalo Sabres
D Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks
D Mike Green, Washington Capitals
C Henrik Sedin, Vancouver Canucks
RW Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks
LW Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals

Second Team

G Ilya Bryzgalov, Phoenix Coyotes
D Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings
D Nicklas Lidstrom, Detroit Red Wings
C Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins
RW Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay Lightning
LW Daniel Sedin, Vancouver Canucks

Second Team looks better than the First.
Kane 1st Team? No way 2nd at the most .  St Louis & Gaborik should be 1st & 2nd Team, IMO.
BTW, that’s the second straight year as a 2nd Team All-Star for Lidstrom after being a 1st Team All-Star 9 times in 10 seasons. hmmm Hmm.

Fine, but the point is that he DIDN’T get the shaft.  Sedin deserved to win it.

You can’t be shafted if the guy who WON deserved to WIN more.
