Move On Sidney

from Cathal Kelly of the Globe and Mail,

You can judge the quality of a person’s career by the number of acts they manage to fit into it.

Most of us get three – enter workforce; work; retire and/or die. Sidney Crosby, the world’s oldest 33-year-old, has had a half-dozen.

Act 1: The Arrival of the Savant. Act II: The Takeover. Act III: The Concussion Years. Act IV: The Resurrection. Act V: The Return to Glory. That puts us somewhere in the midst of Act VI.

Crosby’s sixth act is becoming a bit of a mess. What exactly is the motivation of the Pittsburgh Penguins captain here? What’s his purpose? What does he do? It isn’t winning, that’s for sure. It’s more like existing (but a lot better paid than if you tried it).

Six acts is a lot to live, and it’s beginning to feel like a lot to watch as well. There is a natural point at which fans want their heroes to begin shuffling off the stage. It’s not that they’ve stopped liking the guy. It’s that they’ve grown tired of hearing the same stories. They want new stories.

The article has caught the attention of Pittsburgh media.

I’m ambivalent about Crosby but that’s a bad take.

Not a Pens fan or a Crosby fan but this
comes across as borderline deranged.

There are so many great playoff matchups happening right now.
Fans are now able to return more safely in at least more limited numbers.

The games so far have been close and exciting with lots of twists and turns.

Usually if you don’t like one particular sports story or focus you can focus on other
things you find more interesting.

It’s a little reductive and condescending, but sometimes there’s some truth to the
notion that behind a column like this (or a ranting comment by anyone including me) there’s often someone who’s not having the best day and who could benefit from focusing on something more constructive or positive.

Crosby looked absolutely fantastic to my eyes in that first game.
I don’t have any energy invested, one way or another, but several times during the game I thought, damn that was a great play.

Pittsburgh is approaching the same stage the Red Wings entered before they started their rebuild.  They did finish first, so they aren’t finished as yet. In saying that I hope the Islanders knock them out. smile
