Morning Line

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr talked throughout the lockout about growing the game internationally as key to growing HRR. The NHL owners have often gazed across the Atlantic as an underexposed market for the North American version of the game. Under the circumstances of an Olympics nine time zones away, can the NHL game be helped by attendance in Sochi? Is it worth postponing the NHL schedule for two weeks to grow the game with little or no input to the process?

Something has to change to make it worth everyone's while. The talk will begin shortly and a resolution has to come quickly, because in terms of the Olympics, it’s not that far away.

As well, any player injured during the games had little or no contact with their NHL teams, or medical staffs.

Well that is just plain stupid. I wonder if that is the case for the NBA players in the olympics or for international football players who play in the world cup.

I kind of like the idea of a world cup of hockey tournament in february. You take a couple of weeks off every few years and get a positive bump in both media and fan interest and take that through the playoffs.

If the NHL wants to broaden their HRR east of the Atlantic, then what they need to do is have the NHL champ face off against the Euro Champ.

Have the KHL winner face off against the SEL, FNL, etc to determine a European champion and then face the Stanley Cup winner.

The Champions League is absolutely huge across the globe. Only hockey is close to soccer for being such a large global game.

It can be done, but it probably won’t. Not for a while anyway.
And I wouldn’t be surprised if in 20 or 30 years, there’s an NHL Euro league and that finalist will face the NHL finalist for the Cup.
