This is kind of funny. People complained about Abdelkader’s contract because it was a huge overpayment and way too much term, and also because any reasonable person could see that the Wings were absolutely not going to have Datsyuk and Zetterberg for the balance of the contract.
Kassian’s not getting crazy money, he’s not getting crazy term and there’s no reason to believe that Kassian and McDavid won’t be linemates for the entirety of the contract.
Further, the problem in Detroit is that within a span of less than a year the Wings extended Abdelkader on a terrible contract, then signed Nielsen to another terrible contract, then signed Helm to a bad contract to boot.
Kassian’s contract is better than any of those three and he’ll be younger when this contract expires than any of the Wings’ players will be when theirs do.
