“I had bought our longtime head scout, Barry Fraser, a Cartier watch for $3,000, even though it was really a $7,000 watch. One of the [owners] called me and said, ‘We can’t be wasting money on that.’

“The next morning I called them and told them they could stick the team up their ass. “[Twenty-six, actually 37] owners, with everybody telling me what to do and how to do it.”
