More of the same Coyote-relocation-talk wackiness via ‘ridiculous and irresponsible’ story

So I'm working the late shift on Free Agent Eve for Paul, and I come across this baffling story from the New York Post's
Josh Kosman

Sin City is getting hockey, two sources close to the situation told The Post.

The NHL is arranging the sale of the Arizona Coyotes to billionaire William Foley who will move the team to Las Vegas giving it its first major professional franchise, one source said.

Uh, Foley wants his own franchise...

“Las Vegas has reached 10,000 season ticket deposits,” enough to justify a franchise, the other source said.

That's not what the NHL suggested.

Foley said in January that he needed 10,000 ticket deposits to get an NHL team.

Yes, that's true, but the principals in the story are issuing simple denials...

A Coyotes spokesman said, “The Coyotes are committed to playing in Arizona.” When asked for how long, the spokesman reiterated it was committed to playing in Arizona. “Period.” Arizona last year ranked 28th in attendance.

The NHL denied the story.

And as you might expect, the NHL is not happy with this fluffernutter...

When you go with two sources discussing a franchise relocating based upon guesswork, that's downright dangerous.

And where would they play?

Gary Bettman isn't happy with this, either, as the Toronto Sun's Mike Zeisberger reports:

In fact, commissioner Gary Bettman told a FOX affiliate in Arizona that the story was “garbage,” adding that the Post was told prior to the publishing of the report that it was false and should not be run.

The piece, which indicated that prospective Vegas owner Bill Foley would take over the franchise, was called “100 percent false” by Coyotes co-owner Anthony LeBlanc.

The coyotes are not moving to Vegas—and the reason is simple:

$500M (USD) expansion fee split among the owners (that they don’t have to share with the players).

If they just said that in a press release these ridiculous rumors would go away.

For the fans in Arizona, a move of the Coyotes to Vegas would be the next best thing to having them in the Phoenix area.

Realistically, if the Coyotes move, it won’t be to Vegas.

What d ca said.
The NHL’s not passing up half a billion.

On a side note, if Vegas were to get a team, I think it’d be much smarter that they receive a relocating team rather than an expansion.

It’s hard enough keeping fans interested in a good hockey market when starting fresh (see Columbus), let alone a bad hockey market.

If the NHL really wanted that franchise to succeed out of the gate, a relocated team such as the Coyotes makes sense.

I guess that is still a possibility considering that teams in Quebec and a 2nd one in Toronto would easily pony up $500M for an expansion franchise.

But then I suppose the NHL would just expand to 34 teams and get $2B in expansion fee’s, haha.

Yeah you better believe the brass isn’t going to pass up that juicy expansion fee! That said, the comically exaggerated and exasperated denials from Bettman and Daly over the years remind me of “Baghdad Bob”, the former Iraqi Information Minister. No doubt the two are sweating a lot behind the scenes, hoping that the “Yotes manage to secure an arena for this season pretty darn soon.

LOL, I agree shazam88.
Whenever Daley and Bettman go off like that, it makes you think they’re actually hiding something.

Maybe the ‘Yotes aren’t going to Vegas, but I wouldn’t be shocked if they were relocated to KC or somewhere else.
