from David J. Neal of the Miami Herald,
Though Panthers captain Bryan McCabe played through multiple facial fractures suffered early in Saturday night’s win against New Jersey, he’ll miss the next several weeks after undergoing Sunday surgery, Panthers coach Pete DeBoer said Sunday morning.
DeBoer also said Keaton Ellerby would be called up from Rochester and take McCabe’s place in the lineup.
“He’s got a broken finger, too,” Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen said of McCabe. ‘‘He’s our captain, our general in a sense. It speaks volumes of not only his pain tolerance, but his competitive desire to be out there and play with us.”
X-rays done between the first and second period suggested there probably was a break, DeBoer said. McCabe returned to the game during the first period with a large plastic lower face guard.
