Marleau, Thornton Sign Extensions In San Jose

SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that forwards Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau have agreed to terms on three-year contract extensions. The extensions will commence on July 1, 2014 following the expiration of Thornton and Marleau's current contracts.

"Patrick and Joe continue to perform at an elite level in the National Hockey League and, most importantly, they make the other players around them better," said Wilson. "They both made it very clear that they wanted to stay in San Jose and we were able to agree on contracts that fit with our team building philosophy."

Entering play today, Thornton leads the NHL in assists with (47) and is T-6th in scoring with 53 points. In 1,176 career NHL games with Boston and San Jose, Thornton has posted 1,171 points (337 goals, 834 assists), the most of any NHL player since Thornton entered the League in 1997-98. He is currently 25th on the NHL's all-time assist list and 48th on the NHL's all-time points list. Among active players, his 1,171 points rank third and his 834 assists rank second.

Since his trade to San Jose on Nov. 30, 2005, the Sharks have the most points and wins in the NHL, posting a 389-184-76 record (65.8% points percentage) and Thornton is the NHL's second-leading scorer during that span (717 points [168 goals, 549 assists] behind Alex Ovechkin, 759 points). Named the eighth captain in team history on Oct. 7, 2010, Thornton ranks second on the Sharks all-time points list and is first in assists.

Thornton represented Team Canada at the 2010 (gold medal) and 2006 Winter Olympics, 2004 World Cup and in two World Championships (2001, 2005). The six-time NHL All-Star was the recipient of the 2006 Hart Memorial Trophy (Most Valuable Player) and Art Ross Trophy (NHL's leading scorer).

Marleau is T-14th in the NHL in goals (21) and T-18th in scoring (47 points). In 1,216 NHL games, all with San Jose, Marleau has notched 908 points (425 goals, 483 assists). Over the last six seasons, Marleau has scored the fourth-most goals in the NHL (187), behind only Alex Ovechkin, Steven Stamkos and Corey Perry. He currently sits 72nd on the NHL's all-time goal list and is 24th on the NHL's all-time list of game-winning goal scorers (81).

Marleau ranks first on the Sharks all-time scoring list for points, goals, power play goals, short-handed goals, game-winning goals and shots. He served as the team's captain from 2003 thru 2009.

Marleau was named to the 2014 Canadian Winter Olympic Team and also won a gold medal with the 2010 squad. In addition, he represented Canada at the 2004 World Cup and four World Championships (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005). The three-time NHL All-Star has been named the recipient of the RAM "Sharks Fan Favorite Award" in each of the three seasons since the award's inception.

Among active playoff scorers, Thornton ranks T-11th with 97 points (22 goals, 75 assists) and Marleau ranks 13th with 96 points (57 goals, 39 assists). In addition, Marleau ranks second in postseason goals scored and game-winning goals (14) among active players.
