NEW YORK (February 19, 2013) – Calgary Flames defenseman Mark Giordano has been fined $10,000, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for slew-footing Dallas Stars forward Antoine Roussel in NHL Game No. 215 in Dallas on Sunday, February 17, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

As defined by NHL Rule 52: “Slew-footing is the act of a player using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent’s feet from under him, or pushes an opponent’s upper body backward with an arm or elbow, and at the same time with a forward motion of his leg, knocks or kicks the opponent’s feet from under him, causing him to fall violently to the ice.”

The incident occurred at 11:53 of the second period. Giordano was assessed a minor penalty for tripping.

As a first-time offender, the maximum Giordano could be fined was the lesser of $10,000 or one-half of his daily salary.
