Ken Holland Wants to Sign Wings’ Restricted Free Agents

From the Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James:

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland plans to gear up talks to re-sign his restricted free agents over the coming week, but already the Wings figure to be a deep and competitive team next season.

That’s because they’re largely going to be the same team that went 16-3-2 in March and April when, for the first time all season, all their principal players were healthy.

“I like our team,” Holland said. “I think we’ve got a good mix. We’ve identified our core, and we’ve got some role players we really like, and we’re going to be deeper with Jiri Hudler coming back.”

the depth of wingers means Valtteri Filppula can center the third line

This is weird.  Looking at the roster, you’ve got Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Filppula, Helm, Abdelkader and Draper, meaning that the real depth is at centre and they’re going to have centres playing on the wing.

Plus, I thought the brass were pretty happy having him playing on the Zetterberg’s wing…

It makes sense, the past two seasons have seen Filp start the season centering a tertiary scoring line. By bringing back Hudler and Bert they have the forward depth to do so again.

No mention of Maltby. Hope they keep him in some capactiy (video guy, scout, etc). Ritolas a perfect fit for that 4th line; probably the first call up.

I wouldn’t hold my breath on Maltby.

Ritola’s not waiver-exempt anymore so he’s likely going to be on the team all year.
