Jonathan Drouin On His Relationship With Jon Cooper

from Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times,

There's no question touted Lightning rookie Jonathan Drouin would love to have played more in this postseason.

He's watched most of it from the press box, having played in just four games, the rest as a healthy scratch.

But Drouin, 20, denied Wednesday that there's a rift between him and coach Jon Cooper, claiming their relationship is good. A Toronto Sun story last week described how Cooper normally "avoids talking to or making eye contact with Drouin," and that the coach "seemingly has no faith or belief in" the No. 3 overall pick from 2013.

"We have a good relationship, we talk a lot," Drouin said. "There's not bad blood towards each other. Everything's perfect."

Drouin said he understands the reasons behind Cooper not playing him. Drouin also said Cooper is "easy to talk to," when you want advice, with a good line of communication.

Well, that’s what you should say….maybe it is the truth, maybe not….but I do think he should play more…

From my huge sample of observing him in one game, Drouin is not just sloppy on defense, he is lazy too.  He does not exert any real effort to play a two way game.  If he can be had for current value (#4 draft pick, then I would say grab him.

As a Bolts’ fan, who’s seen him play for some 70+ games during the regular season,  DocF’s assessment is bang-on.

I’ve complained bitterly (in the local media’s comments section) about this kid’s inability to shake the need to constantly dingle and dangle and dipsy-doodle and (ultimately) give away the the puck senselessly - as his line-mates get punished in the paint, waiting for the shot or centering-pass that never comes.

At one point, Cooper had Drouin and Filppula together on the same powerplay unit (OMGZ - I have never cursed so vehemently, in all my years of watching Hockey) - It was dangle, dangle to Filppula - Dangle, dangle, dangle back to Drouin, dangle, dangle, dangle, dangle back to Filppula, dangle, dangle back to Drouin - And the two minutes are just evaporating as these two stroke themselves to no end - And then, the inevitable: “Here, you take it. I’ve boxed myself into a corner” with the panicked pass for the odd-man shorthanded rush…In-*bleeping*-FUR-iating!

The kid continues to audition for an audience of scouts that no longer exist - And his blind (cute) passes in the defensive zone and the neutral zone are gaffes to behold.

He needs a year or two in the AHL - To get his overdeveloped sense of self under control.

Shoulda taken Seth Jones, Stevie - Shoulda taken Jones…Oh, well. Can’t win them all, I guess.
