JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/28/10

Time again to a tip a few back, honoring the best of the best from last night’s NHL action:

***Cheers to Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis, whose highlight reel third period goal broke a 3-3 tie in Tampa and led the Lightning to a win over Pittsburgh by a final of 5-3. St. Louis also added an empty netter late to seal things and I’m fast becoming more and more convinced that the heart of the Bolts just keeps getting better all the time.

**Cheers to goaltender Michal Neuvirth of the Washington Capitals, who recorded his first NHL shutout with 29 saves in Raleigh as his club rolled to a 3-0 decision over the Carolina Hurricanes. With Semyon Varlamov on the shelf for much of the early-going, Neuvirth has taken charge in the Washington crease and his six wins tie Montreal’s Carey Price to lead the league in that all-important category. Varlamov will be hard-pressed to reassume number one duties when healthy, if Neuvirth’s run of success so far this year continues.

*And big time cheers to San Jose captain Joe Thornton, who opened the scoring against New Jersey last night, added a second goal in the middle frame and put up three assists for good measure in a 5-2 final over the Devils. At 3-3-1 prior to last night’s tilt, the Sharks had been relatively blasé from the onset of the season and were looking for a spark to get on some sort of roll. As goes Thornton, so will go his club and Big Joe factoring in on all five San Jose goals last night is a pretty promising sign for future success.

Later today, the latest weekly installment of News from the Farm, where I check in with the five AHL affiliates of the NHL’s Southeast Division clubs and recap the week gone by.

Enjoy the day, folks.

St. Louis is one of the most underappreciated players in the game over the past 10 years, thanks for the link to the highlight clip.  What a goal!
