Well, it’s been pretty quiet on the Winnipeg Jets front these days - yes, there have been some minor goings-on, and in a hockey-starved town like this one any small development gets some big play. Personally, I’m don’t think I have the ability to hang on every tiny detail over the summer - it might actually drive me nuts. Until I start seeing some real Jets jerseys on some real Jets players, I’m going to keep enjoying the warm Winnipeg summer - the calm before the storm. We’ve waited fifteen years - what’s a couple more months?
So, what HAS been going on?
- The Winnipeg Jets hired former Manitoba Moose player Jimmy Roy to be their Director of Player Development. Roy spent nine years with the Moose (four in the IHL, five in the AHL) before heading across the pond to play for the, uh, Iserlohn Roosters of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. (Roosters fun fact: Jimmy Roy is third in most goals of all time for the franchise. In sixth place? A dude named BRYAN ADAMS.
Anyway, Roy has played a total of zero games in the NHL, which begs the question - why wouldn’t the Jets have offered this kind of position to Mike Keane? You know, the hometown boy that played 1161 regular season NHL games, 220 NHL playoff games (!) and won three (!!!) Stanley Cups? He’s even a partner in a local player development facility!
- Nikolay Zherdev didn’t sign with the Jets after all - was there ever really a chance he was going to become a Jet? Who knows. Anyway, he’ll be playing with the big-talking Alexei Kovalev in Russia for Atlant Mytishchi which has a way cooler logo than the Iserlohn Roosters. Hope Zherdev doesn’t travel with beer in his bag…
- Speaking of not signing with the Jets, Zach Bogosian still hasn’t inked a deal with the team. Patience young (and old) grasshoppers…
- Finally, any jerseys out there with the new logo are fake. Don’t buy ‘em. The official merch I’ve seen either in person or online includes t-shirts of all sizes, hats, baby onesies, car flags, and pucks. No jerseys.
I’m heading out east for a vacation with the family, but I’ll be sure to stay on top of all things Jets while I’m gone and report as Internet connectivity allows. And feel free to follow me on Twitter if you’re so inclined: @bensigurdson.
