Jeremy Roenick Suspended From NBC Sports

from Stephen Whyno of the AP,

Former NHL forward Jeremy Roenick was suspended indefinitely by NBC Sports on Monday for his inappropriate comments about coworkers.

Roenick made a series of questionable remarks about fellow hockey broadcasters Kathryn Tappen, Patrick Sharp and Anson Carter during a recent appearance on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast.

Smart move, Jeremy.

And totally surprising.

from Jay Rigdon of Awful Announcing,

The main comments in question were likely Roenick’s remarks about NBC Sports host Kathryn Tappen, where Roenick suggested he’d be open to sleeping with her:

During the podcast, Roenick described a summer vacation he took in Portugal with his wife and NBC Sports studio host Kathryn Tappen. He told a story of how at least one hotel guest approached Roenick to ask if the three were together. “I play it off like we’re all going to bed together every night, the three of us,” Roenick said. “If it really came to fruition, that would really be good. But it’s never going to happen.” Later during the same discussion, Roenick said that his wife and Tappen are close friends and he praised Tappen’s professionalism. “Kathryn Tappen is one of the most professional … sports personalities that I know. She is true blue one of my favorite people in the world.”

more, Patrick Sharp brought up too…

This is such obviously terrible judgment and yet
none of it is quite “ugly”.

But I can see how it acts to diminish Tappan as a professional
even if he cluelessly didn’t mean to. And even Sharp a little bit
too. And it may have even been sincere admiration on his part.
But it takes away the focus from and undermines his coworkers’ ability to
seen as professionals first.

Can you picture the three of them on set. And not imagine Roenick
as kind of hopeful that maybe something would happen with either or both
of them? It’s hard to come back from and it was so dumb. But it wasn’t mean.
I don’t think it was meant to be degrading or even comes off as degrading.
More uncomfortable and a little unfair to them trying to their jobs.

My guess is Roenick has a good enough relationship with all of them.

And if not, then the only people who can decide that are Tappen, Sharp, and Carter.

I think everyone’s overreacting a bit on this one. As usual.

They sound like they have a pretty good friendship between them. It’s pretty obvious he was just joking around about everything.

Let him come out with an apology and everyone can move on.

Counterpoint: is it an overreaction to wonder how this guy doesn’t have the common sense to understand that you do not talk about wanting to f*ck your co-workers? Especially while speaking into a microphone and having your words recorded in order to be distributed worldwide?

Also, lots of people think they have a good relationship with a co-worker until the co-worker tries to get them in bed.

In this climate, it’s surprising he wasn’t fired outright, and I assume that’s because neither Tappen nor Sharp were really upset by him joking around.

JR has always been an idiot, all the way back to Nagano. He’s completely replaceable on what’s always kind of been lackluster NBC hockey coverage anyway.

He should apologize has face off, and be back by the playoffs after some “introspection.”

10-ply, NBC.

The only way this gets anywhere is if both Tappan and Sharp file harassment claims.

Roenick is a fool. Years in the media and he can’t figure out when to shut up.

And of course no suits will be filed, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was a tactless, unprofessional comment that would have rightfully infuriated Tappen.

Before speaking aloud, think about what you’re saying. I know Roenick doesn’t exactly have many brain cells to rub together these days, but he’s had a pretty long career being a talking head on NBC Sports. One would expect he be capable of considering his words before saying them.

If he can be so bold on a podcast, what kind of other stuff has he said about her in private? Perhaps that’s the reason for the indefinite suspension.

Did it though? Has anyone but NBC (and the usual twitter outrage mob) said anything about this? You think Tappen took a vacation to Portugal with Roenick and his wife and is now shocked and appalled by the horrible words this man said?

Until I hear something directly from Sharp, Tappen or Carter, i’ll call bullshit on this whole thing.

Not to pick nits, but I lived in Chicago when he was broke into the league, and rest assured, was an idiot well before Nagano.

Statement from Kathryn Tappen on Jeremy Roenick: “While Jeremy and I continue to be good friends, what he said was unacceptable, especially among workplace colleagues. I do not condone his comments.”

We are a few.steps in to an Orwellian State and the Thought Police gain more control and strength. Should Roenick learn to keep his mouth shut, YES! But is what he said really that egregious that he needed to be canned? I cannot stand the guy but this absurd. It’s not like he said this while on the air.

The PC World will be come Our prison if.we.let it.
