Jeremy Roenick Sues NBC

from Gene Maddaus of Variety,

Hockey star Jeremy Roenick sued NBC Sports for wrongful termination on Friday, claiming the network discriminated against him as a straight man after he made off-color remarks on a Barstool Sports podcast.

Roenick also alleges that the network retaliated against him because he was an outspoken supporter of President Trump in 2016....

Roenick also states that he asked Flood for permission to speak at the Republican National Convention in 2016. According to the suit, Flood responded: “I’m not saying what you can do. You know who you work for. You work for NBC. That would not look good on your NBC record.”

The hockey star alleges that Flood subsequently made derogatory remarks about Trump to Roenick, such as “your boy is messing up this country.” Roenick alleges that his support for Trump was one of the reasons leading to his firing.

The lawsuit, filed in New York Supreme Court, also accuses NBC of violating the state law against discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation.

I am all for these rules and standards applying fairly to everyone.

Am I am far far from being an employment lawyer or having
any special insight. We don’t know how his contract reads or
whether he was really made to feel his job was at risk based on
which party or politicians he supports.

But private employers have really wide purview to fire employees in general.
Look at how many people are getting canned because someone dug up
a ten year old tweet that showed poor taste or doesn’t fit what many expect
today. Like it or not, it seems like only discrimination- age, sex, race, and now
sexual orientation and identity are really protected - not political viewpoint.

Claiming to be improperly discriminated against - under the terms of the recent Supreme Court decision? - because he expressed a sexual attraction and fantasy re: a coworker, not to mention one he worked closely with on the air - seems even flimsier. Seems like NBC could rightly argue that it wasn’t his sexual orientation but his expressing wildly unprofessional opinions that greatly undermined his and his coworkers abilities to work together that got him fired.

Well, after November, he’ll either be just another low life laughing stock or our next Secretary of State.

You can be a Republican and be a jerk, too;
You can be a Democrat and be a jerk, too;
You can be a Libertarian and be a jerk, too;
You can have any political view and still be a jerk.

It sounds like JR is more JeRk than anything else.

NBC should hire him back, let him do another of his pointless in game interviews, and then fire him again - not because of his politics, but because he’s a TERRIBLE broadcaster….. sick

Oh yeah what a brave warrior. Wealthy, white heterosexual men have had far too tough in this country for far too long. PREACH!
