James Neal Headed To Calgary With A Five-Year Contract

The Calgary Flames landed the biggest fish left on the free agent market Monday.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the Flames have signed to a five-year contract.  He notes the contract will carry a cap hit of roughly $5.75 million.

In 71 games last season for the expansion Vegas Golden Knights, Neal had 25 goals and 19 assists. His career-high in goals came during the 2011-12 season when he scored 40 for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today that they have signed free agent forward James Neal. 

Neal, a 30-year-old native of Whitby, Ontario, played 71 regular season games last season as an alternate captain with the Vegas Golden Knights scoring 25 goals and 19 assists for 44 points and 24 penalty minutes. Originally drafted by Dallas in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2005 NHL Draft, he has played in 703 career regular season games scoring 263 goals and adding 232 assists for 495 career points and has netted 20+ goals in all ten seasons. The three time NHL all-star has also played an additional 100 playoff games where he has scored 31 times and added 24 assists for 55 post season points and has been to the Stanley Cup finals in back-to-back years with Vegas and Nashville.

You can argue term, age, etc but fact is Flames are a better team with him and those goals will help them. The moves Flames have made could get them back in playoffs.

Could’ve had Stastny feeding him slick dishes.

Probably going to mentor Ktatchuk.  Teach him how to play in the league.

I’m a bit suprised Vegas didn’t offer to keep him at that term and price. I guess they are trying to stick to their original plan as much as possible. That means keeping terms short unless it is a younger guy.

Vegas is already going to face a monumental task in matching their first season. It’s probably best for their future if they don’t get misguided by what could be a fluke season. Keep plenty of cap space free in case they can deal for Karlsson.
