Is NHL Linesman Scott Driscoll Partly Responsible For Carcillo Suspension?

from Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post,

New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault has suggested that NHL linesman Scott Driscoll is partly to blame for inciting winger Dan Carcillo in a chaotic sequence of events during Thursday’s playoff game, a sequence that led to a 10-game suspension....

“My biggest disappointment in the whole thing is probably what’s happening to Dan Carcillo,” Vigneault told reporters on Saturday. “At the end of the day, if the right call is made on the ice, that whole situation doesn’t happen.”

Carcillo had been assessed a charging minor.

“I still don’t understand why Scott grabbed him in that fashion,” Vigneault said. “All Scott had to do was tell him — Dan didn’t know he had a penalty — ‘can you come to the box with me here? you’ve got a penalty.’”

Yes. But only partly.

Maybe because Carcillo skated right over to two guys who were in the middle of a fight, and given Carcillo’s history of poor decisions the linesman may have thought Carcillo was going to jump in considering how close he got.  No one but Carcillo is to blame.  Countless players have had bad calls go against them, and yet still find a way not to go bananas like Carcillo did when an official was restraining him.

“Obviously, it’s inexcusable what Dan did,” Vigneault said. “But those incidents, put one after the other, leads to a young gentleman’s career, moving forward, might be very tough here.”

Why would Vigneault suggest that Carcillo’s career may be in jeopardy in NY if Vigneault believes he got a raw deal?

Carcillo is a hot head and a thug. It’s what they pay him for. This comes with the territory. You take the good, you take the bad. You take them both…. Well someone should explain the facts of life to Vigneault.
