If You Catch Your Hockey on DirecTV…

...you might have an issue in the future, according to Alex Sherman at Business Week:

DirecTV, the largest U.S. satellite- TV provider, is threatening to pull more than 25 channels owned by News Corp.’s Fox Networks to “mitigate the madness” of programming price increases by content providers, a company executive said.

Fox is asking DirecTV to pay 40 percent more for channels including FX, National Geographic and several regional sports networks, according to DirecTV Executive Vice President Derek Chang. DirecTV will remove the channels from its package offerings by Nov. 1 if Fox doesn’t lower its asking price, Chang said in an interview today.

DirecTV is the latest company to spar with content providers about programming price increases. Cablevision Systems Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc.’s FiOS pulled the Tennis Channel last month after the network asked for “significantly higher” fees. In October 2010, Cablevision paid Fox what it called “an unfair price” for World Series games after a two- week blackout

Well that really stinks for DirecTV customers especially for those who love Sons of Anarchy and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I love the show ‘Sons of Anarchy’ and I would be really upset if this channel was taken away from me! I have DISH Network, and I am glad to know as an employee that DISH will continue to have FX and National Geographic, as well as all of the sports networks available when I want. Hopefully they get things fixed soon!

Not again.  I just switched away from Dish last season because they were squabbling with Comcast during the hockey season.  What a pain.  The wall on my house where the dishes get attached is going to look like termites have been at it if this keeps up.

I switched from Dish because of this crap last year. I went with game center this year instead of center ice.  DirectTV has a crappy dvr, just saying.

So here’s a question… Suppose Directv pulls the regional networks. Does that affect games on those networks if you have the Center Ice package? For example, Center Ice shows games from Canadian channels I don’t receive otherwise with Directv, why not games from FOX channels, even if they’re pulled? (That’s kind of what I’m paying the Center Ice subscription for, right?)
