How Good Will The Seattle Kraken Be?

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,

The Seattle Kraken are going to be very good.

How good?

Well, we’ll have to wait until Wednesday night’s expansion draft to see whom GM Ron Francis selects to play for the NHL’s 32nd team. But based on the players who are available, as well as what’s out there in free agency, don’t be surprised if they challenge the Golden Knights for first place in the Pacific Division.

This is a team that potentially could have Carey Price, Mark Giordano, Vladimir Tarasenko and Yanni Gourde — and that’s without taking into account the various trades that might already be in the works.

For all we know, Seattle could also end up with Zach Hyman, Dougie Hamilton and Gabriel Landeskog — not to mention the “misfit” types like Vegas’ William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessault, who just needed an opportunity to show what they can do in the league.

With $81.5-million to spend, here is a look at what Seattle’s roster could look like:

They aren’t going to spend their entire salary cap so forget about them drafting all those big contracts AND getting the big UFAs. They’ll want to save some of that space to take on a couple contracts from teams looking to free up cap space in order to get more picks.

They are fortunate to find themselves in the Pacific division were they might be able to compete for a spot in year one. However, I don’t think all the stars will align as they did for Vegas. They probably won’t be at the bottom of the pack, more like somewhere in the middle which could actually hurt them in the long run.

The real question is can they lure a player like Landeskog or Hamilton to join them. Those are players who likely want to play for a contender.
