So says Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet and Doug MacLean chimes in too.

As a Detroit fan, it warms my heart to see Colorado hire Sakic and Roy, and NYR considering Messier and Gretzky. Hopefully other teams will follow suit and hire underqualified former players for key management positions. Stupid is as stupid does.
Hey EP, think Mario wants to be a coach?

Open your ears…Messier & Gretzky have voiced interest in the Ranger coaching job. Their interest does not mean ipso facto mean Sather will consider them.
I bekieve the Rangers will interview many candidates; Eaves, Eakins, Tippet,
Vigneault to nme just a few.
Messier is employed by the Rangers as a special assistant to Sather…and is
involved cin myriad of assignments.

I wish both of them best of luck. It will guarantee the Rangers suck for many more years. Combine Gretzky’s inability to identify talent, with lazy coaching skills, with Sather’s general inability to GM and you have a permanent loser in NY.
