Foligno Hit On Dwyer Last Night

via Damien Cox tweet,

Foligno not penalized for head shot last night against Carolina’s Dwyer, but league will fine or discipline him today under new rules.

added 1:11pm,

TORONTO (October 15, 2010) – Ottawa Senators forward Nick Foligno has been fined $2,500 (the maximum permitted under the Collective Bargaining Agreement) as a result of an illegal check to the head on Patrick Dwyer of the Carolina Hurricanes in NHL game #43, October 14, the National Hockey League announced today.

“While there was no injury as a result of the hit, it is clear that Foligno delivered a shoulder check from the blind side that made primary contact with Dwyer’s head,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell.  “It is also clear that Foligno was delivering the hit in an attempt to get the puck.  Finally, in determining that a fine was the appropriate discipline for this incident, I took into account that Foligno has not been suspended previously by the League.”

The incident occurred at 6:16 of the third period.  There was no penalty assessed on the play.

Foligno’s hit the same as the one at 4:10 in the league video that was deemed legal

legal. This was one Dwyer should have avoided by having his head up, looking in the direction he was skating.

According to the Sens coach, the league is fining Foligno but not suspending him

makes sense. It’s a good reminder to be careful to avoid headshots all together. No one should want to see this sort of play in this league.

Here’s why I’m unsure what to think about this hit:

Dwyer ran into Foligno as much as Foligno hit him.  Dwyer actually ran into space Foligno already occupied.  And I’m sorry, but Foligno has every friggin’ right to be in front of Dwyer, whether his head is up or not.

I agree Primis…

I dont like the fine, but I think it was to appease those asking for a suspension

Agree with Primis…..
appears to me as “much ado about nothing’.

The open ice hits are being taken out of the NHL little by little. Primis summed it up best:

...but Foligno has every friggin’ right to be in front of Dwyer, whether his head is up or not.

Yeah…it looked like Foligno was going for the puck, not trying to annihilate Dwyer.
