When Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider hedged his bets regarding GM Paul Holmgren's future, everyone and their brother's uncle's cousin in South Jersey figured that the Flyers would shuffle the managerial deck. Surprise surprise:

I dunno if I’d call the guy who had canned applause piped in for Sarah Palin’s puck-drop a bleeding-heart liberal, but I wouldn’t call Snider a member of any sort of political party involving sane, sound management.

You have to have that tiny bit of insanity in you before you can work for the Flyers. Hextal fits the bill.

Our own EvilPen has moved upward himself, from short bus humor to biting political satire.

Oh look, it’s the Pens fan peanut gallery with no clue making comments. First, Hextall was in the Flyers organization’s front office from when he retired in 1999 through 2006 in various roles including pro and amateur scouting. He’s the person who scouted and identified players (who are no longer on the Flyers but played vital roles elsewhere) like Richards, Carter, Sharp, and Seidenberg. He then went to LA with Dean Lombardi to LA in 2006 where he was the Asst. GM helping him build that team into a Cup winner. His lateral move back to the Flyers for the same position was seen as bringing him back into the fold to become GM one day in the not too distant future. When he came back he made no bones that his desire was to move up one notch in the career ladder and be a GM of an NHL team. It’s apparent that with the GM openings around the NHL this offseason that many teams were asking to speak with Hextall. It’s obvious Snider didn’t want to lose him again so the’ve made this decision, which was easier with Lukko stepping down this past December as President.

^^ phillyd,
I could well be wrong - I try to stay out of Metro division drama - but I figured the previous comment was wrt Holmgren moving up to President, rather than Hextall. But who knows.
Seemed like a no-brainer that the job was Hextall’s when he left LA, though I’m kind of curious about how he got along with Robitaille.
