Fleury Signs 7-Year, $35 Million Contract with Penguins

Sources tell TSN Marc-Andre Fleury has signed a 7 year, 35 million dollar extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Update 3:39pm ET: Press release from the Penguins is below…

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to a seven-year contract, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

“At a young age, Marc-Andre has established himself as one of the elite goaltenders in the game,” Shero said. “He is coming off a tremendous performance in the playoffs and he was one of the main reasons we reached the Stanley Cup Final. It’s great news for the Penguins organization and our fans to continue to sign our core group of young players.”

Fleury, 23, posted a 19-10-2 record, along with a 2.33 goals-against-average and .921 save percentage which tied for fourth in the NHL.  Fleury won four straight games from November 24th to December 5th before suffering an ankle injury that forced him to miss 35 games.  He registered a 10-2-1 record in 14 games following his return from the injury, while posting a 1.53 GAA, a .947 SV%, and two shutouts.  Fleury has won 10-straight starts on home ice during the regular season dating back to November 24th.

Fleury won his first seven playoff starts and 11 of the first 12 games, leading the team to the Stanley Cup Final.  He recorded three shutouts becoming the first Penguins goaltender to earn three shutouts in a single playoff season.  Fleury tied for first in the playoffs with 14 victories, while finishing second in the NHL during the postseason with a 1.97 GAA and .933 SV%.  Fleury has won 15 career playoff games which is the second most for a goaltender in Penguins’ history.

Fleury earned four shutouts during the regular season and now has 11 career shutouts which ties him for second on the Penguins’ all-time list with Les Binkley.  He ranks fifth on the Penguins’ all-time list with 173 games played and has moved into fourth place overall with 76 career victories. Fleury won a career-high 40 games during the 2006-07 season.

The Sorel, Quebec native was originally selected by the Penguins, first overall, in the 2003 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut during the 2003-04 season.
