The tweet posted above is just… I mean, wow.

It seems too many times fans forget hockey players (and other people in the public eye) are people too, and to hear that a guy who is/was making bank for being injured thought about offing himself should be a serious reality check for some people.

Not everyone handles life’s curveballs the same way, so the next time you tell someone to “suck it up,” or “well, _____ is dealing with _____, so why are you complaining,” stop and think for a minute. Think about what you’re saying, why you’re saying it, and to whom you’re saying it.

And ultimately, if you don’t want to take the time and effort to do that, then keep your insensitive, dickbasket mouth shut just don’t say anything at all.

@redMenace… completely agree with you.

We’re dealing with the biblical definition of RPP here.  Rich Peoples Problems.

I don’t ever want to see someone take their own life.  That stuff is tragic.

That said, if DiPietro thinks his life as a multi-millionaire athlete is so tough he needed to check out he is supremely lucky he became an athlete… because a ‘normal’ life would have had him scribbling ‘Brooks was here’ a whole hell of a lot sooner.

Being rich doesn’t make you immune to that shit.

Wow…this just really makes me think.  He’s under a lot of pressure with that contract.  Yes, he’s an athelete but he’s also a person.

I wish him well.

@redMenace…  you nailed it.

I’ve been involved with a lot of people trying to deal with and recover from what for them is a life-shattering tragedy of epic proportions.  So, what if someone else can handle the same situation with nary a problem?  It doesn’t matter.  It doesn’t matter at all.

A person much wiser than I once said, “NEVER tell someone you know how they feel.  Because you don’t.”

it’s not deeps’ fault the islanders gave him such a stupid contract. who wouldn’t sign it, after all? that he’s had mostly misfortune and underachieved since then is on both the isles and, sadly, him as well. let’s hope his career gets revived down the road once he’s healthy and stopping pucks again, and/or he’s bought out?

related, from the Not News Dept.: charles wang is awful.

Your point was that ‘not everyone handles curveballs the same way’.  I agree.

My point is that if you think DiPietro’s life was a ‘curveball’, a non-pro athlete’s life would be 4 pitchers at the compass points throwing fastballs at him simultaneously.

So sure, if you want to be exceptionally concerned about DiPietro, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.  All kinds of people with relatively charmed lives get depressed and check out all the time.  Neurosis isn’t class-specific.

On any kind or serious list of ‘people who have major crosses to bear’, however, I wouldn’t think DiPietro would crack the, oh, top 100 million.

Wow, you’re a classless POS.

I’d be curious when these thoughts occurred, DP is a multiple concussion sufferer.

Huh.  I thought intelligent, semi-intelligent and even mostly-comatose people realized, by now, that depression and suicidal urges had a tenuous, at best, link to economic success, occupation, or what “crosses to bear” someone might have.  Professional athletes have a much more stressful occupation than almost any of us and they do it in the public light constantly.

It’s a wonder we don’t hear this from more of them.

First start in the AHL, gives up 5 goals on 12 shots in the first period.

And takes a seat for period two.

Probably more mental than physical.

A sad state of affairs.
