Dave Bolland’s Stand-Up Act Fails

from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune,

After creating a bit of a firestorm when comments the Blackhawks center made about the Canucks’ Sedin brothers during a radio broadcast in Chicago on Monday night turned viral and drew a reaction from Vancouver, Bolland backtracked following the Hawks’ 4-3 shootout victory in St. Paul, Minn.

Bolland drew the ire of Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault during a broadcast of “Blackhawks Live at Harry Caray’s” on WGN-AM 720 when Bolland referred to the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel, as “sisters.”

Bolland was asked if the Sedins would still be sisters if they joined the Hawks.

“Well, they’ll never become Hawks,” Bolland said. “I don’t think we’d let them on our team. We’d be sure not to let them on our team. And, yeah, they probably still would be sisters. I think they might sleep in bunk beds. The older one has the bottom one, the younger one got the top.”

On Wednesday in Vancouver after the audio went viral, Vigneault responded.

The sisters give me the creeps!

Seriously timbits i don’t get it at all, what’s creepy about them? they’re amazing hockey players, stand up family men and philanthropists in our community. How do they come across as creepy?

How do they come across as creepy?

I think part of it is the insistence on the identical look with facial hair, no distinctions at all. The fact they seem inseperable, whether on the bench or on the ice. They don’t seem like they could do anything without the other one. With the Sedins you don’t get 2 full players, you get one and a half.  I get the bunk beds comment by Boland, it seems to fit them.

We can disagree and argue about all kinds of hockey related aspects of the Sedins, dismissing them as creepy is really low imo and takes the discussion in the wrong direction.

I kinda think it’s funny. The sisters comment isn’t very funny, but I like the line about the bunk beds.

I don’t know that it “failed”... I mean Elane Vigneault got his panties in a bundle over it.(yep, still going with the girl jokes)

I love how everyone makes all these “classy” comments. You know what, Alain, classy is not even responding, classy is how the Sedin’s responded to the comment. Who cares what Bolland said? Sometimes its nice to have a guy joke around every once in a while instead of “oh, they got a lot of good people over there” and that bs all the time. Sorry Bolland wasn’t busy pumping your team’s tires! It’s called a rivalry, why don’t you and Gillis go back to bitching to the league for the unfair way they treat your team all the time?

The best way the Sedins could have responded when asked for their reaction would have been to say, “Who’s Dave Bolland?”

This is the correct answer.

So what now if Quenneville gets asked and he says he doesn’t appreciate Vigneault saying that Bolland has the IQ of bird seed and that this is the professional hockey league, not some bush league, so it’s expected that coaches in this league would be held to a higher standard without resorting to calling other teams’ players idiots?  Then Vigneault has to explain he was also joking and this whole nothing affair gets blown even farther out of proportion?

Actually… so long as Quenneville calls the Sedins creepy, I think I’m ok with this plan.

Hey Timbits….that’s a REALLY cool name.

Did Vigneault get his “panties” in a knot ? (aren’t girls wimpy?)
Or did he just make a few jokes in a scrum when someone asked about it?  They say VAN is “freaking out”, but it’s not like they called a press conference.

If this is “no big deal”, and should have gone unchallenged, then why did Bowman and Quenneville make Bolland offer that lame, meek apology?

Indeed I do.  Though I was thinking of changing my handle to BigGulp, or McRib, or Doritos.

McRib is special, it only comes around once a year!
