from Ed Willies of the Vancouver Province,
As he begins his scouting mission for Seattle’s new NHL franchise, Dave Tippett is preoccupied with a variety of concerns, most of which have nothing to do with actual scouting.
No, that’s the fun part of the job and it will arrive soon enough. But when he talks about the team being in its building phase, Seattle’s one-man hockey department means it literally.
On those occasions he can drag himself to NHL games, Tippett is focused on things such as the size and configuration of the locker rooms, the location of the video room and the number of parking spots reserved for players.
There is no detail too small for Tippett, and when you’re starting a $1.5-billion operation, there are a lot of details to consider. If this all goes right, the Grungemonsters, or whatever they’ll be called, hope to replicate the jaw-dropping success of their expansion brethren from Las Vegas.
Until then it’s about tape measures and blueprints for Tippett.
