from Dmitry Chesnokov of PuckDaddy,
The NHL Awards aren’t until June, but Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings has already won a significant one in hockey. It was announced today that Pavel Datsyuk is the winner of this year’s Kharlamov Trophy — awarded to the best Russian NHL player, as chosen by his peers.
It was the closest vote in quite some time. Fedor Tyutin( of the Columbus Blue Jackets was the last one to cast his vote to ensure that Datsyuk would unseat Alex Ovechkin, who won his fifth Kharlamov Trophy in a row last year.
“The level of play Pavel shows is consistently unbelievably high,” Tyutin said. “When you watch what he does on the ice you get a feeling that there is nothing that Pavel can’t do.”
Alexei Kovalev, who also voted for Datsyuk, said that “he is the most important player for Detroit. When Datsyuk comes back from injuries, the team looks very different.”
continued with a few words from Datsyuk too…

Ssssshhhh, don’t tell Shane Doan.
He still thanks Ilya Bryzgalov is the best player in that series.

This is fantastic! Finally to see Pav get the recognition he deserves.

Even better, Chesnokov goes on to explain that Bryzgalov finished fourth in voting and that he voted for himself.

Because he’s never been a finalist for the Hart or won three Selkes in a row.

He deserves to be recognized as the best Russian in the game. He got that.
Finally…

Doan has taken some heat from Wings fans for saying that. I don’t see anything wrong with that. He was pumping up his team and supporting his goalie. I wouldn’t really expect him to say a player on the other team is the best in the series, even if it’s true (Pavel deserved that trophy as well in the year he finished as a Hart candidate as well).

Man are we Wings fans a spoiled bunch. 20 straight playoff appearances, Shanahan, Yzerman, Lidstrom, Datsyuk etc. Ridiculous really.

Voter breakdown.
Bryzgalov not only voted himself No. 1; he voted himself for first, second and third place. And if you bother to add up the totals, you’ll note that ALL THREE VOTES WERE ACTUALLY COUNTED IN THE FINAL STATISTICS.
It wouldn’t have made a difference in the rankings, but still, kind of a douche move.

Sven,
Thanks so much for finding that.
Truly a shitty move by Bryzgalov.

But wait, doesn’t that directly negate what the NHL guru, Shane Doan stated just a few days ago?
Suck it, Shane. You’re a joke….and we’re all pretty sure you know it.

I agree with Russian Rocket. He’s their captain and just trying to instill confidence in his underdog team. Also, he said things like:
They are a great team with an incredible history and they have accomplished so much over the last 20 years
Obviously they’ve got some pretty talented forwards, and we might count on Bryz a little more
What a shite talker!!!

Nobody blames Doan, but in the same light, why should anybody blame fans for loving to point out how wrong he was?

Excuse me, Pavel Datsyuk has no peers in the NHL. Compatriots, yes. Peers, no.
